IChemE - the Institution of Chemical Engineers - is the global professional body for chemical, biochemical and process engineers. It was founded in 1922, received a Royal Charter in 1957, and is headquartered on Railway Terrace in Rugby, UK, with offices in Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore and around 30,000 members worldwide.

As a publisher, IChemE is deliberately small and specialist. It owns its journals but does not print them itself: production, hosting and submission all run through Elsevier on ScienceDirect, with one title co-published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. That means the editorial identity is IChemE's - much of it in association with the European Federation of Chemical Engineering - while the author experience (Editorial Manager, APCs, read-and-publish deals, Research4Life waivers) is Elsevier's. If you work in process design, process safety, food and bioproducts processing, sustainability or chemical engineering education, this is a portfolio worth knowing well.

Eight IChemE-owned journals are published with Elsevier as of 2026:

• Subscription titles with a hybrid OA option: Chemical Engineering Research and Design, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Food and Bioproducts Processing, Sustainable Production and Consumption, Education for Chemical Engineers.
• Fully open access titles: Digital Chemical Engineering, Carbon Capture Science & Technology, and Process Engineering for Sustainable Development.
• Co-published: Molecular Systems Design & Engineering, with the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Several of these carry the additional status of official journal of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. IChemE also publishes The Chemical Engineer, a member-facing news magazine, along with conference proceedings such as the Hazards series - useful sources, but not peer-reviewed research venues.

Because IChemE titles sit on Elsevier's platform, they inherit Elsevier's open-access machinery: gold OA on the fully-OA titles, hybrid OA on the subscription titles, green self-archiving with per-title embargoes, and coverage under Elsevier's national read-and-publish agreements. If your institution has an Elsevier deal, your APC may be fully or partly covered - check the ESAC registry or your library before you pay anything.

List prices below are in USD, exclude tax, and are revised annually. The price you actually see at submission can be lower depending on your country, institution and society membership, so always confirm on the journal's open-access page.

The default licence for open-access articles is CC BY. Publishing in a subscription title without choosing OA costs the author nothing.

• Default model: single-anonymised peer review across the Elsevier-published IChemE titles - reviewers see author identities, authors do not see reviewers.
• Editorial handling: subject editors and an editor-in-chief per title, supported by IChemE-linked editorial boards.
• Turnaround: typically a few weeks to a couple of months to first decision; each ScienceDirect journal page publishes its own review-speed and acceptance metrics, which is the number to trust.

1. Match the paper to the title. Scope statements differ sharply between ChERD, PSEP, FBP and SPC; a mismatch is the most common desk-reject reason.
2. Read the journal's Guide for Authors on ScienceDirect - each title sets its own structure, length and figure requirements.
3. Prepare the manuscript. IChemE titles use Elsevier's article formats and a numbered citation style; the Elsevier LaTeX (elsarticle) and Word templates are available on SciSpace.
4. Submit through Editorial Manager, linked from the journal's ScienceDirect homepage.
5. Sort out open access at acceptance, when Elsevier checks your eligibility for an institutional agreement or a Research4Life waiver.

IChemE is a COPE member and its journals follow COPE guidance on authorship, corrections, competing interests and retractions, alongside Elsevier's publishing-ethics policies. Data-availability statements are expected or encouraged depending on the title, and process-safety papers involving incident data carry additional confidentiality expectations. Nothing in the portfolio carries elevated predatory or quality-scrutiny concerns.
