Publication Guide
Editora FGV is the university press of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), the Rio de Janeiro-based foundation created in December 1944 to professionalize Brazilian public and private administration. The press has been publishing since 1945, and its catalog - administration, economics, law, sociology, political science, and history - mirrors the research strengths of FGV's schools in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília.
For researchers, the FGV name matters mostly through its journals. FGV's schools publish roughly fifteen active scholarly journals, hosted on the OJS-based FGV journals portal (periodicos.fgv.br) and, for the flagship titles, on SciELO. Three of them are landmarks of Brazilian scholarship: RAE - Revista de Administração de Empresas (1961), Brazil's first business administration journal; Revista Brasileira de Economia (1947), the country's oldest economics journal; and Revista de Direito Administrativo (1945), one of Brazil's most traditional law reviews. This guide covers which FGV venue fits your paper, what publishing costs (usually nothing), how peer review works, and how to submit.
Which FGV journal fits your paper?
| You're most likely to... | Choose this route |
|---|---|
| Have a management or business administration paper | RAE - Revista de Administração de Empresas - FGV EAESP's flagship since 1961; indexed in Scopus, Web of Science (SSCI), SciELO, and Redalyc; no fees. |
| Have an economics or econometrics paper | Revista Brasileira de Economia (FGV EPGE, est. 1947) for general economics, or the Brazilian Review of Econometrics for technical econometric work. |
| Have a public administration or organization-studies paper | Cadernos EBAPE.BR or Revista de Administração Pública - both from FGV EBAPE, both open access. |
| Have a law paper | Revista Direito GV (FGV Direito SP) for general legal scholarship, or Revista de Direito Administrativo (FGV Direito Rio) for public and administrative law. |
| Have a contemporary-history or social-science paper | Estudos Históricos - published by FGV CPDOC, focused on Brazilian contemporary history and the social sciences. |
| Want to publish a scholarly book in Portuguese | Editora FGV's book program - the press's core activity; proposals go directly to editora.fgv.br. |
What Editora FGV publishes
- Scholarly books - the press's historical core: monographs, textbooks, and reference works in administration, economics, law, and the social sciences, mostly in Portuguese.
- Academic journals - roughly 15 active titles run by FGV's schools (EAESP, EPGE, EBAPE, the law schools, and CPDOC), with the FGV journals portal also preserving archives of discontinued titles such as The Brazilian Economy and Arquivos Brasileiros de Psicologia.
- Applied publications - practitioner-facing periodicals such as AgroANALYSIS and GV-executivo, which sit alongside the peer-reviewed journals.
The portfolio is regional by design: FGV journals are the reference venues for Brazilian business, economics, and legal scholarship, publishing in Portuguese, English, and Spanish depending on the title.
Open access and costs
FGV journals follow the SciELO model of institutionally funded open access - often called diamond OA - rather than the APC model used by large commercial publishers.
| Route | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gold/diamond OA (default) | $0 | RAE states explicitly that it charges no submission or publication fees; the same no-fee norm applies across the FGV portal. |
| Licensing | Free to read | Flagship titles publish under Creative Commons licenses (commonly CC BY) via SciELO. |
| Print books | Purchase | Editora FGV's book catalog is sold commercially; many titles also have digital editions. |
Because there are no author fees, transformative agreements and fee waivers are not part of the FGV model. If a specific journal's policy matters to your funder, confirm the license and fee statement on that journal's page at periodicos.fgv.br before submitting.
Peer review
FGV journals use anonymized peer review, with the exact workflow varying by title. RAE describes a particularly thorough process: a triple-anonymized system in four stages, moving from desk review by the Editor-in-Chief through a Scientific Editorial Board member and at least two external referees. Other titles, such as Revista Brasileira de Economia and Cadernos EBAPE.BR, run conventional double-anonymized review. Decision times vary; the multi-stage flagship processes can take several months, so plan accordingly.
How to submit
- Pick the journal. Match your field and language: management (RAE), economics (RBE), econometrics (BRE), public administration (Cadernos EBAPE.BR, RAP), law (Revista Direito GV, RDA), history (Estudos Históricos).
- Read the author guidelines. Each journal posts its own scope, language policy, and formatting rules - ABNT or APA citation style depending on the title.
- Prepare the manuscript. SciSpace hosts formatting templates for FGV journals; check length limits and the structured-abstract requirements common at Brazilian journals.
- Submit through the journal's system. Most FGV titles use Open Journal Systems on periodicos.fgv.br; RAE submissions go through ScholarOne in partnership with SciELO.
- Track and revise. Anonymized review means all identifying information must be scrubbed from the manuscript file itself.
Ethics and integrity
As a SciELO publisher, FGV's journals follow SciELO's editorial and open-science policies, which align with COPE guidance on misconduct, retractions, and authorship. RAE has adopted open-science practices since the early 2000s, including full open access to its back catalog. Plagiarism screening and anti-duplication checks are standard at the flagship titles; consult each journal's ethics statement for specifics.
