Edinburgh University Press (EUP) is the scholarly publishing arm of the University of Edinburgh and one of the UK's established humanities and social science presses. It publishes roughly 40-50 peer-reviewed journals and around 200 books a year, with particular depth in Scottish studies, literary studies and critical theory, film and screen studies, Islamic and Middle Eastern studies, linguistics, philosophy, politics, and Scots law.

The press traces its origins to the 1940s (1948 is the year usually cited) and became a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Edinburgh in 1992. It acquired Dundee University Press in 2013, strengthening its law and textbook lists. Because EUP is a university-owned, non-profit press rather than a large commercial STM publisher, its journals are smaller, more specialised, and edited by scholarly societies or university-based editorial teams. • Books - about 200 new titles a year: monographs, edited collections, reference works, and undergraduate textbooks, including the law list inherited from Dundee University Press.

EUP does not publish in the natural sciences, medicine, or engineering, so it is not indexed in PubMed. Coverage in Scopus and the Web of Science Arts & Humanities Citation Index is good for its established titles but is not universal across the list - check the specific journal before you submit if indexing matters to your assessment framework.

EUP supports gold, hybrid, and green open access.

Licences are usually CC BY for author-funded open access, with more restrictive Creative Commons options available where a funder allows them. EUP revises its charges periodically and applies discounts and waivers case by case, so treat the range above as indicative and check the live price list or ask your librarian before budgeting. If you have no funding, ask the editorial office about waivers, or use the green route, which costs nothing.

• Model: double-anonymized peer review is the norm across EUP journals - your identity and the reviewers' identities are both withheld.
• Practicalities: prepare an anonymised manuscript file with a separate title page, and strip identifying references and file metadata.
• Editorial structure: most journals are run by an academic editor or editorial collective, often on behalf of a society, with EUP handling production and distribution.
• Turnaround: humanities peer review is slower than STM. Several months to a first decision is normal, and review essays or special issues can take longer.

1. Pick the journal. Read a recent issue - fit with the journal's conversation matters more at EUP than any metric.
2. Read the notes for contributors. Word limits, house style, and referencing conventions are set per journal.
3. Format your references. EUP humanities journals typically use Chicago or MHRA; law journals use OSCOLA.
4. Anonymise the manuscript. Double-anonymized review is standard.
5. Submit through the journal's system. Most EUP journals use ScholarOne Manuscripts; a few smaller titles still take submissions by email through the editorial office, so follow the instructions on the journal's own page.
6. After acceptance. You will complete a publishing agreement, choose an open access option if you want one, and review proofs.

Edinburgh University Press is a member of COPE and follows COPE guidance on authorship disputes, plagiarism, corrections, and retractions. Expect standard requirements: originality and no concurrent submission, disclosure of funding and competing interests, permissions cleared for any third-party images or long quotations, and ethical approval where research involves human participants. As a humanities and social science press, EUP's data-sharing expectations are lighter than in STM, but funder mandates still apply if your work is grant-funded.
