Publication Guide
The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) is Europe's leading academic society for diabetes research. Founded in 1965 and headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, it is a membership-based non-profit whose mission is to encourage and support diabetes research and the rapid diffusion of acquired knowledge. Unlike large commercial houses, EASD's publishing program is small and focused: two journals covering diabetes, metabolism, obesity and related disorders.
Its flagship, Diabetologia, has been the official journal of EASD since 1965 and is produced in partnership with Springer Nature. In September 2025 the association launched Metabologia, a fully open-access sister journal. This guide covers which of the two titles fits your paper, open-access routes and costs, peer review, and how to submit.
Which EASD journal fits your paper?
| You're most likely to... | Choose this route |
|---|---|
| Have a high-impact basic, translational or clinical diabetes paper | Diabetologia - the flagship, with a 2025 Impact Factor of 10.4 and top-quartile standing in endocrinology and metabolism. Selective, hybrid OA. |
| Need fully open-access publication from day one | Metabologia - EASD's OA journal for diabetes, obesity, metabolism and related disorders; accepts original studies, clinical trials, reviews and interdisciplinary work. |
| Have solid work that is broader than Diabetologia's selective scope | Metabologia - designed as a wider-scope home within the same society ecosystem. |
| Want your APC covered by an institutional deal | Diabetologia - it participates in Springer Nature's read-and-publish agreements, so eligible corresponding authors publish OA at no direct cost. |
What EASD publishes
- Diabetologia - "Clinical, Translational and Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism." Publishes high-quality articles on all aspects of diabetes, from basic science through translational work to clinical research. Edited by Hindrik Mulder (Editor-in-Chief); published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. Print ISSN 0012-186X. Reached Volume 69 in 2026 and recorded roughly 8.7 million downloads in 2025.
- Metabologia - launched September 2025 as a fully open-access journal covering research across diabetes, obesity, metabolism and related disorders, including original studies, clinical trials, reviews and interdisciplinary work.
EASD also runs the EASD Annual Meeting - one of the world's largest diabetes congresses - whose abstracts appear in Diabetologia, plus e-learning and postgraduate education programs.
Open access and APCs
Diabetologia is a hybrid journal: you can publish behind the subscription paywall at no cost (there are no submission fees or page charges) or pay for Open Choice open access. Metabologia is fully open access.
| Route | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diabetologia - subscription route | $0 | No submission fees or page charges; self-archiving of the accepted manuscript permitted under Springer Nature's standard green OA policy |
| Diabetologia - Open Choice (hybrid OA) | £3,590 / $4,990 / €4,190 (2026 list, before tax) | License CC BY or CC BY-NC-ND |
| Diabetologia - via read-and-publish agreement | $0 to the author | Corresponding authors at participating institutions publish OA with the fee covered - check your library or the Springer Nature agreement checker |
| Metabologia | See the journal's current fee page | Fully OA; fee and any launch-period arrangements are set on metabologia.org |
Springer Nature's standard APC waiver and discount program applies to Diabetologia for authors in eligible low- and middle-income countries. Prices are revised annually - always confirm on the journal's own fees page before submitting.
Peer review
Diabetologia uses single-anonymized peer review: reviewers know the authors' identities, but not vice versa. The journal is selective, and many manuscripts are triaged editorially without external review; the journal does not publish average decision times, so check the current author guidance for expectations. Metabologia follows standard open-access peer-review practice for the field - see its author guidelines for the current model.
How to submit
- Pick the journal. Selective, high-impact work: Diabetologia. Fully-OA or broader-scope work: Metabologia.
- Read the author guidelines. Diabetologia's are hosted on its Springer Nature journal page and diabetologia-journal.org.
- Prepare your manuscript. Diabetologia uses Vancouver-style referencing; templates and formatting support are available on SciSpace.
- Submit. Diabetologia uses ScholarOne (ManuscriptCentral) at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/diabetologia - not Editorial Manager. Metabologia's submission portal is linked from metabologia.org.
- Check OA funding. Before choosing Open Choice, run the Springer Nature agreement checker to see if your institution's deal covers the fee.
Ethics and integrity
Diabetologia operates under Springer Nature's editorial policies, which follow COPE guidance on authorship, conflicts of interest, corrections and retractions. Clinical trials must be prospectively registered, and reporting standards (CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA) apply to the relevant study types. Data-availability statements follow Springer Nature's tiered research-data policy. As a society publisher, EASD's editorial decisions are made by academic editors who are active diabetes researchers.
