The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) is Japan's national learned society for chemistry, founded in Tokyo in 1878 and modeled on the British Chemical Society. It is one of the world's oldest chemistry societies and remains the definitive voice of Japanese chemistry, running the country's largest annual chemistry meeting and publishing a small, focused journal portfolio.

Since 2024, CSJ's two flagship English-language journals - the Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan (BCSJ) and Chemistry Letters - have been published in partnership with Oxford University Press on the Oxford Academic platform. CSJ also owns or co-owns several titles published with Wiley, including The Chemical Record and the Asian Chemical Editorial Society (ACES) journals Chemistry - An Asian Journal and Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry. CSJ's portfolio is small and chemistry-only - roughly five core titles rather than a broad multidisciplinary catalog:

• BCSJ - the society's flagship since 1926, publishing across the full breadth of chemistry with three article types (Accounts, Articles, Short Articles). Published monthly with Oxford University Press.
• Chemistry Letters - short, rapid communications and highlight reviews, published monthly with Oxford University Press.
• The Chemical Record - review journal published with Wiley.
• ACES titles - CSJ is a co-owning society of Chemistry - An Asian Journal and Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry, published with Wiley on behalf of the Asian Chemical Editorial Society.
• Japanese-language member publications such as Kagaku to Kogyo (Chemistry & Chemical Industry) serve the domestic membership and are not research-submission venues.

BCSJ and Chemistry Letters are hybrid journals on the Oxford Academic platform: standard subscription publication carries no author charge, and authors can optionally pay an open-access charge to publish under a Creative Commons license.

APCs are set by Oxford University Press and revised periodically - always check the journal's current charges page before submission. Fee support for authors in low- and middle-income countries follows OUP's developing-countries policy.

• Model: single-anonymized peer review - reviewers know the authors' identities, but reviewers remain anonymous. Manuscripts typically go to two reviewers.
• Editorial standards: editors are practicing chemists appointed by the society; Chemistry Letters is led by an editor-in-chief at the University of Tokyo.
• Turnaround: the society does not publish average decision times; Chemistry Letters is explicitly positioned for rapid communication.

1. Pick the journal. BCSJ for full papers and accounts; Chemistry Letters for short, urgent communications; the Wiley-published titles via their own submission portals.
2. Read the author guidelines. Each journal's instructions live on its Oxford Academic (or Wiley) page.
3. Prepare your manuscript. BCSJ requires its Word template, US spelling, IUPAC or Chemical Abstracts nomenclature, and journal abbreviations per Chemical Abstracts. SciSpace hosts CSJ formats with the numbered citation style built in.
4. Submit via ScholarOne. BCSJ and Chemistry Letters use ScholarOne Manuscripts (mc.manuscriptcentral.com); references may be in any readable style at first submission.
5. Choose your license after acceptance. Standard (subscription), CC BY, or CC BY-NC - the OA charge applies only to the Creative Commons options.

CSJ journals operate under Oxford University Press's publication-ethics framework; OUP is a COPE member and applies COPE guidance on authorship, corrections, and retractions. Authors retain copyright under all license options, granting OUP an exclusive license to publish. Data and nomenclature standards follow IUPAC and Chemical Abstracts conventions.
