The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is the definitive US professional society for nutrition science. Its roots go back to 1928, when the American Institute of Nutrition was founded alongside The Journal of Nutrition - the first journal created solely for nutrition research; the society took its current form in 2005 when the nutrition societies merged, and it will mark its centennial in 2028. ASN publishes four peer-reviewed journals that together span the field from molecular nutrition to clinical trials and population health.

Since January 2023, ASN's journals have been published in partnership with Elsevier (they previously appeared with Oxford University Press), which changed several practical things for authors: two titles converted to full Gold open access, page and color-figure charges were eliminated on the subscription titles, and the journals became eligible under Elsevier's institutional read-and-publish agreements. • The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) - founded 1952; basic and clinical studies relevant to human nutrition. Named one of the top 100 most influential journals in Biology and Medicine by the Special Libraries Association.
• The Journal of Nutrition (JN) - founded 1928; peer-reviewed research on all aspects of experimental nutrition, plus reviews and symposium proceedings.
• Advances in Nutrition - review journal synthesizing current knowledge across nutrition science and highlighting research gaps.
• Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN) - broad-scope Gold OA journal, from molecular nutrition to food policy and global health.

All four are indexed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science.

ASN offers three routes, with fees set on Elsevier's price list (USD, before tax; revised annually - always check the journal's fees page before submitting):

Key points:

• Subscription publishing is free. AJCN and The Journal of Nutrition charge nothing unless you choose the OA option - page and color-figure charges were dropped in January 2023.
• Green OA - self-archiving of the accepted manuscript is permitted under Elsevier's standard sharing policy, with a per-title embargo (check Sherpa Romeo).
• Read-and-publish agreements - authors at institutions with an Elsevier transformative agreement may publish OA at no direct cost; check the ESAC registry or your library.
• Waivers - Elsevier's Research4Life-based waiver and discount program applies to the fully-OA titles for authors in eligible countries.
• OA articles are typically published under a CC BY licence, with CC BY-NC-ND available on some titles.

ASN journals use single-anonymized peer review: reviewers know the authors' identities, but not vice versa. Each journal is led by an academic editor-in-chief with an editorial board of practising nutrition scientists.
