The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is the definitive US professional society for anesthesiology. It was founded in 1905, when nine Long Island physicians organized the first professional anesthesia society; the organization adopted its current name in 1945 and is today headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, with more than 60,000 members. Unlike large commercial houses, ASA is a focused society publisher: its portfolio consists of the flagship peer-reviewed journal Anesthesiology (established 1940) and the member news magazine ASA Monitor. Both are produced in partnership with Wolters Kluwer under the Lippincott imprint, which handles production, hosting, and open-access administration, while the journal retains complete editorial autonomy from the society.

• Anesthesiology - a monthly peer-reviewed journal covering anesthesiology, perioperative, critical care, and pain medicine. It publishes original clinical and basic research, meta-analyses, clinical focus reviews, education material, editorials, and correspondence. It is the official journal of the society but operates with full editorial independence.
• ASA Monitor - the society's news magazine for members, covering clinical practice, payment and policy, patient safety, and society affairs. Articles are commissioned and editor-reviewed rather than externally peer reviewed, so it is not a venue for original research.

ASA also produces practice parameters, guidelines, and patient-safety resources, but these are society documents rather than author-submitted publications.

Anesthesiology is a subscription (hybrid) journal. Authors have three realistic routes:

Fee-waiver arrangements for authors in low- and middle-income countries are not publicly listed; contact the editorial office if an APC would be a barrier. 1. Choose the article type. Match your work to the categories in the Anesthesiology instructions for authors (original investigation, clinical focus review, education, correspondence, etc.).
