Publication Guide
The American Marketing Association (AMA) is the definitive professional society for marketing in the United States, founded in 1937 through the merger of the National Association of Marketing Teachers and the American Marketing Society. Unlike large commercial publishers, the AMA owns a small, elite portfolio: five peer-reviewed journals that consistently rank among the most influential venues in business research. The journals are produced and hosted in partnership with SAGE, so authors interact with SAGE's platforms for submission, open access, and licensing while the AMA retains editorial ownership.
If you work in marketing, consumer behavior, marketing analytics, or policy-facing consumer research, an AMA journal is likely the most prestigious home your paper can find. This guide covers how to choose among the five titles, what each publishes, open-access routes and costs, the review process, and how to submit.
Which AMA journal fits your paper?
| You're most likely to... | Choose this journal |
|---|---|
| Have a substantive, theory-building paper on marketing strategy, branding, or firm-consumer interaction | Journal of Marketing (JM) - the AMA flagship (est. 1936), an FT50 and UT Dallas list title with a 2026 Impact Factor around 10.6. |
| Have a rigorous empirical or methodological paper - econometrics, experiments, quantitative modeling | Journal of Marketing Research (JMR) - est. 1964, also FT50/UT Dallas listed; the field's premier methods-driven outlet. |
| Study marketing's intersection with regulation, consumer welfare, or public policy | Journal of Public Policy & Marketing (JPP&M) - est. 1982, acquired by the AMA from the University of Michigan in 1990; 2026 Impact Factor around 5.3. |
| Study cross-border, cross-cultural, or global marketing phenomena | Journal of International Marketing (JIM) - est. 1993, acquired from Michigan State University in 1997. |
| Study digital, interactive, social-media, or AI-driven marketing | Journal of Interactive Marketing - joined the AMA portfolio in 2022 and is published with SAGE alongside the other four titles. |
What the AMA actually publishes
Five peer-reviewed journals, all focused on marketing and adjacent fields:
- Journal of Marketing (JM) - the field's flagship since 1936 (it predates the AMA itself), publishing research on real-world marketing questions relevant to scholars, managers, consumers, and policy makers.
- Journal of Marketing Research (JMR) - the premier outlet for marketing methodology, quantitative modeling, and experimental consumer research since 1964.
- Journal of Public Policy & Marketing (JPP&M) - chronicles and analyzes the joint impact of marketing and government policy on economic performance and consumer welfare.
- Journal of International Marketing (JIM) - global marketing strategy, export marketing, and cross-cultural consumer research.
- Journal of Interactive Marketing - digital, mobile, social, and interactive marketing, including AI and personalization research.
The AMA also publishes practitioner content (Marketing News and the ama.org content hub), but those are not peer-reviewed research venues.
Open access and APCs
All five AMA journals are subscription (hybrid) titles on the SAGE platform. There is no fee to publish the standard subscription route.
| Route | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription publication | $0 | Default route; readers need a subscription or institutional access. |
| Hybrid OA (SAGE Choice) | From ~$3,000 per article | Available on all five titles after acceptance; CC BY licensing offered. APCs vary by title - check the current SAGE Choice price list. |
| Green self-archiving | $0 | SAGE policy permits posting the accepted manuscript to a repository or personal site; check per-title embargo terms on Sherpa Romeo. |
| Read & Publish agreements | $0 to the author | If your institution has a transformative agreement with SAGE, the OA fee may be fully covered - ask your library or check the ESAC registry. |
Fee decisions never affect editorial outcomes: acceptance comes first, and the open-access choice is made afterward.
Peer review process
- Model: double-anonymized peer review across the portfolio - author and reviewer identities are concealed.
- Selectivity: acceptance rates at JM and JMR are among the lowest in business research; multiple revision rounds are normal.
- Turnaround: first decisions typically arrive within 2-3 months, though this varies by journal and season.
- Ethics: the journals are COPE members and follow COPE guidance on authorship, corrections, and retractions.
How to submit
- Pick the journal using the decision table above, and read recent issues to confirm fit - AMA editors desk-reject papers that misjudge scope.
- Read the author guidelines on the journal's SAGE page; each title has its own manuscript-preparation requirements.
- Format your manuscript in the AMA marketing author-date citation style (APA is accepted at some stages) - SciSpace templates handle this automatically.
- Submit via ScholarOne (SAGE Track / ManuscriptCentral) - for example, Journal of Marketing submissions go through manuscripts.manuscriptcentral.com/ama_jm.
- Respond to reviews thoroughly. Revise-and-resubmit is the norm at these journals; a careful response document matters as much as the revision itself.
Ethics and integrity
AMA journals operate under COPE membership via SAGE and follow standard research-integrity practice: disclosure of conflicts of interest, data-availability expectations that have tightened in recent years, and COPE-aligned retraction procedures. Authorship changes after submission require editor approval.
Templates and formatting on SciSpace
SciSpace hosts approved templates for AMA journals with the AMA author-date reference style built in. Import your manuscript, and the formatting, citations, and reference list adjust to the target journal automatically - useful when moving a rejected paper between JM, JMR, and other marketing outlets with minimal rework.
