The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) is the oldest and largest US professional society for gastroenterology, founded in 1897 and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Unlike commercial mega-publishers, the AGA runs a small, tightly curated portfolio: five peer-reviewed journals covering the full arc of digestive-disease research, from molecular biology to endoscopic technique to everyday clinical practice. The journals are owned by the society and published in partnership with Elsevier, which handles production, hosting on ScienceDirect, and open-access infrastructure.

• Gastroenterology - the flagship, publishing since 1943. Original research, AGA clinical-practice guidelines, reviews, and commentary across GI and hepatology.
• Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology - launched 2003; clinically focused original research and reviews for practicing gastroenterologists and hepatologists.
• Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology (CMGH) - launched 2015; Gold OA basic and translational digestive biology.
• Techniques and Innovations in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (TIGE) - endoscopic methods, devices, and video-rich technique papers.
• Gastro Hep Advances - launched 2022; broad-scope Gold OA across all of GI and hepatology.

The AGA does not publish conference proceedings series or a large book program - the journals are the portfolio.

All five journals offer an open-access route. Prices below reflect 2026 list prices in USD (before tax); Elsevier revises APCs annually, so always confirm on the journal's fee page before submitting.

OA articles are published under CC BY or CC BY-NC-ND licenses. Green self-archiving of accepted manuscripts follows Elsevier's sharing policy. Authors at institutions with an Elsevier read-and-publish (transformative) agreement may have the APC covered - check the ESAC registry or ask your library. Gastro Hep Advances additionally operates an APC waiver program for authors without funding.

AGA journals use single-anonymized peer review: reviewers know author identities, authors do not learn reviewer identities. The flagship titles are highly selective, and a substantial share of submissions to Gastroenterology and CGH is declined at editorial triage without external review - which at least means fast bad news. Decision times vary by journal and article type; each journal's author-information page describes its current workflow.

The AGA journals follow COPE guidance on authorship, corrections, and retractions, and require disclosure of conflicts of interest for authors, reviewers, and editors. Clinical trials must be prospectively registered, and reporting follows the relevant EQUATOR guidelines (CONSORT, PRISMA, STROBE). Image-integrity and plagiarism screening run at submission via the Elsevier platform.
