The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) is the professional home of the ceramics and glass research community. Founded in 1898 at a meeting of the National Brick Manufacturers' Association in Pittsburgh, it is a non-profit society headquartered in Westerville, Ohio, with more than 11,000 members across 70+ countries. Unlike a commercial publisher, ACerS runs a small, tightly focused portfolio: four peer-reviewed journals plus the members' magazine, all published on its behalf by Wiley and hosted on Wiley Online Library at ceramics.onlinelibrary.wiley.com.

That focus is the point. If your paper is about ceramic or glass materials - synthesis, microstructure, mechanical and thermal behaviour, processing, manufacturing, or applications - ACerS journals put it in front of exactly the readership that cares. The four journals divide the field by the kind of contribution rather than by subfield, so the choice is usually clear once you know whether your paper is fundamental science, an engineered product, glass-specific, or needs to be open access on day one.

• Journal of the American Ceramic Society (JACerS) - launched in 1918 (succeeding the Transactions of the American Ceramic Society), it is the society's flagship research journal. Formats include full-length research papers, rapid communications, and invited feature and review articles. Its Journal Impact Factor was 4.2 in the June 2026 JCR release, placing it in Q1.
• International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology (ACT) - founded 2004, aimed at engineered ceramic products and their route to market.
• International Journal of Applied Glass Science (IJAGS) - founded 2010, covering glass science and engineering.
• International Journal of Ceramic Engineering & Science (IJCES) - launched 2019 as the society's fully open-access, interdisciplinary title.
• American Ceramic Society Bulletin - the monthly member magazine, plus the Ceramic Transactions book and proceedings series co-published with Wiley.

ACerS is a society publisher, not a mega-publisher. The whole portfolio is roughly five titles; there is no long tail of low-quality journals attached to the brand.

Three of the four journals are hybrid (subscription with a paid OA option, Wiley's OnlineOpen); IJCES is fully gold open access. Green self-archiving of the accepted manuscript is permitted under Wiley's standard policy, with a per-title embargo. Figures below are the published 2026 charges in USD before tax - Wiley revises prices annually, so confirm on the journal's own author-services page before you submit.

Two things reduce the bill. First, because Wiley is the publishing partner, ACerS journals sit inside Wiley's institutional Read & Publish (transformative) agreements - if your institution has one, your APC may be covered in full. Check the ESAC registry or ask your library. Second, IJCES applies automatic waivers and discounts for authors in countries on Wiley's waivers-and-discounts list, and has run targeted APC discounts for authors from Latin America. Open-access articles are published under a Creative Commons licence, CC BY by default where a funder requires it.

ACerS journals use single-anonymized peer review as the default: reviewers see the author names, authors do not see the reviewers. Handling editors are working ceramics and glass researchers drawn from the society's membership, which is one of the practical advantages of a specialist society venue - your reviewers are usually genuine subject-matter peers rather than adjacent-field generalists.

Turnaround varies by title and by how much revision a paper needs. Plan for roughly two to three months to first decision on JACerS, with communications moving faster than full-length papers. There is no formal transfer cascade advertised across the four titles, but editors will sometimes suggest a better-fitting sister journal on rejection.

2. Format the manuscript. ACerS relaxed its formatting rules for initial submission - you may embed figures, captions, and tables inside the main document rather than uploading separate high-resolution files. Word or LaTeX, double-spaced, with figures near the text that references them.
3. Use the right platform. JACerS, ACT, and IJAGS moved to Research Exchange (ReX), Wiley's submission system, which auto-extracts title, abstract, authors, and affiliations from your file. IJCES remained on ScholarOne because of its APC workflow. The journal's homepage links to the correct system.
4. Prepare references in the ACerS numbered style used across the portfolio.
5. Declare funding, conflicts, and data availability at submission - these are checked before review.
6. Choose your access route at acceptance: subscription publication at no charge, or OnlineOpen if you need or are funded for open access.

ACerS follows COPE guidance on authorship, corrections, and retractions, and its journals inherit Wiley's editorial integrity infrastructure, including similarity checking and image-integrity screening. Standard expectations apply: no duplicate submission, all listed authors must have contributed substantively, conflicts of interest disclosed, and generative-AI use declared under Wiley's AI policy. Data-availability statements are expected, with deposition in a recognized repository encouraged for computational and characterization datasets.
