Publication Guide
The Academy of Management (AOM) is the definitive scholarly society for management research. Founded in 1936 and headquartered in Valhalla, New York, it serves nearly 20,000 members across more than 120 countries and publishes nine peer-reviewed journals plus the annual meeting Proceedings. For business-school researchers, AOM titles sit at the very top of the field: the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ), Academy of Management Review (AMR), and Academy of Management Annals are fixtures of A-journal lists such as the FT50 and the ABDC A* tier.
Publishing with AOM works differently from publishing with a large commercial house. There are no submission fees and no article processing charges on the six flagship journals - they are subscription titles with a free Green open-access route. This guide covers how to pick the right AOM journal, what each one publishes, the open-access options, the review process, and how to submit through ScholarOne.*
Which Academy of Management journal fits your paper?
| You're most likely to... | Choose this journal |
|---|---|
| Have an empirical study with strong theory contribution | Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) - the society's flagship empirical outlet and one of the most-cited journals in business. |
| Have a purely theoretical / conceptual paper | Academy of Management Review (AMR) - publishes theory papers only; no empirical data. |
| Be writing an integrative literature review | Academy of Management Annals - commissioned and submitted critical reviews that reset the conversation in a research domain. |
| Want to reach practicing managers and policy audiences | Academy of Management Perspectives (AMP) - evidence-based papers framed for an academic-practitioner readership. |
| Study management teaching and learning | Academy of Management Learning & Education (AMLE) - research on business education, pedagogy, and the academy itself. |
| Have a phenomenon-driven, exploratory empirical finding | Academy of Management Discoveries (AMD) - pre-theory empirical work that documents surprising phenomena. |
| Want a fully open-access AOM outlet | AMIO (Inside Organizations) or AMOE (Organizations and Their Environments) - the two newest gold-OA journals, hosted on ScienceDirect. |
What the Academy of Management publishes
Nine peer-reviewed journals, all focused on management and organizations:
- AMJ and AMR - the empirical and theoretical flagships, respectively.
- Academy of Management Annals - authoritative review articles.
- AMP - translational, practice-oriented scholarship.
- AMLE - management learning and education research.
- AMD - exploratory, phenomenon-driven empirical work.
- AMIO and AMOE - newer fully open-access journals covering the inside of organizations and organization-environment dynamics.
- Academy of Management Collections (AMC) - curated thematic collections drawing on the AOM archive.
In addition, the Academy of Management Proceedings publishes abstracts of papers and symposia from the AOM Annual Meeting, and Academy of Management Insights translates research for practitioners.
Open access and costs
AOM's model is unusual among major publishers: the six flagship journals charge no submission fees and no APCs.
| Route | Cost | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription publication (AMJ, AMR, Annals, AMP, AMLE, AMD) | $0 | Standard route; access via institutional subscriptions to the AOM collection. |
| Green OA self-archiving | $0 | Authors may share the pre-copyedited manuscript immediately; the final version becomes openly accessible after a 12-month embargo. License CC BY-NC-ND. |
| Gold OA (AMIO, AMOE) | APC applies | The two newest journals are fully open access, hosted on ScienceDirect through a publishing partnership with Elsevier; check each journal's fee page for the current APC and waiver terms. |
AOM does not offer author-funded hybrid OA on the flagship titles and does not run transformative (read-and-publish) agreements, so budget-constrained authors lose nothing by submitting - the Green route is free.
Peer review
- Model: double-anonymized review is the norm - manuscripts must be submitted with the title page and all author-identifying references removed.
- Process: designated subject-specialist reviewers advise the editor; AOM journals are known for developmental, multi-round revise-and-resubmit cycles that substantially reshape papers.
- Selectivity: flagship acceptance rates are low, comparable to other elite social-science venues; expect several months per round.
How to submit
- Pick the journal using the decision table above - scope fit matters enormously at AOM titles, especially the AMJ/AMR empirical-versus-theory split.
- Read the journal's author guidelines and AOM's Style Guide; AOM uses its own author-date style (closely related to APA).
- Prepare the manuscript as a Microsoft Word file with all identifying information removed; templates are available on SciSpace.
- Submit via ScholarOne - each AOM journal has its own ScholarOne (Manuscript Central) site; create an account and upload there.
- Track and revise through ScholarOne; budget time for multi-round developmental review.
Ethics and integrity
AOM maintains a formal Code of Ethics binding on members and authors, along with detailed publishing-policies and research-ethics guidance aligned with COPE-style practice. Its AI policy requires that submitted work be created by the authors, with any AI-tool use appropriate to the research question and properly cited. Copyright in flagship-journal articles is held by AOM, with permissions granted for scholarly reuse; Green self-archiving rights are retained by authors.
