The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is the definitive US professional society for neurology, founded in 1948 in Minneapolis and representing more than 40,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals worldwide. Unlike large commercial houses, the AAN is a society publisher: it owns a focused family of journals built around Neurology, the flagship clinical journal established in 1951, and contracts Wolters Kluwer (Lippincott) to handle production, hosting and sales on its behalf.

If you work in clinical neurology, neurogenetics, neuroimmunology, health services research in neurology, or neurology education, an AAN journal is very likely on your submission shortlist. The AAN portfolio comprises seven scholarly titles plus two magazines:

• Neurology - the official journal of the AAN and one of the most-cited clinical neurology journals in the world. Weekly publication; its 2022 Journal Impact Factor was 11.8 (check the current JCR release for the latest value).
• Subspecialty family - Neurology: Clinical Practice, Neurology: Genetics, Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, and Neurology: Education extend the flagship's standards into focused fields.
• Neurology Open Access - the Academy's newest fully open-access research journal.
• Continuum: Lifelong Learning in Neurology - the AAN's CME review journal for practicing neurologists.
• Neurology Today - the AAN's news publication covering the field and the profession.
• Brain & Life - the AAN's magazine for patients and caregivers.

All research titles are published by Wolters Kluwer (Lippincott) on behalf of the AAN and hosted on neurology.org.

The AAN family offers three OA routes:

• Gold OA (fully-OA journals) - Neurology: Genetics, Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, and Neurology Open Access publish everything open access, with CC BY (and CC BY-NC-ND) licensing.
• Hybrid OA - Neurology offers a paid open-access option on accepted articles; the fee is set on the Lippincott price list, so check the journal's fees page before submission.
• Green OA (self-archiving) - accepted-manuscript archiving follows Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott policy; confirm the embargo terms on the journal's author page.

AAN research journals use single-anonymized peer review: reviewers know author identities, authors do not know reviewers. Neurology is highly selective and triages a large share of submissions before external review, so a fast desk decision is common. The subspecialty titles offer more capacity while applying the same editorial standards. Continuum content is commissioned and editor-reviewed rather than openly submitted.

1. Pick the journal. Use the decision table above; cascading transfer to a subspecialty title is often offered if Neurology declines your paper.
2. Read the author center. Each title's guidelines on neurology.org specify article types, word limits, and reporting standards.
