Weak density-dependence and short-term perturbations as determinants of phytoplankton temporal dynamics
Yves T. Prairie,Carlos M. Duarte +1 more

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined twelve temporal series of phytoplankton abundance in a diverse set of marine and freshwater habitats using semi-variogram analysis coupled with a stochastic discrete-time (daily) Gomper.

Modelling Fluctuating Populations
TL;DR: Modelling Fluctuating Populations confronts head-on one common criticism of simple ecological models - the mismatch between the mathematical mechanisms studied and the questions of top ecological concern.

The Mediterranean climate as a template for Mediterranean marine ecosystems: the example of the northeast Spanish littoral
TL;DR: The Mediterranean climate exerts a major influence on the basic properties of the Mediterranean Sea, which constrains the structure and dynamics of the ecosystem as discussed by the authors, while most other forcing factors show a complex variance structure, with dominant time scales of 50-100 days, and with some of the factors acting as random factors (white noise) at the annual scale (e.g. rainfall), thereby limiting the predictability of the system.

Strong seasonality in phytoplankton cell lysis in the NW Mediterranean littoral
Susana Agustí,Carlos M. Duarte +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the seasonality of phytoplankton cell lysis rates in the NW Mediterranean coastal waters was examined based on measurements of the dissolved esterase activity between 1995 and 1998 in the Blanes Bay (NE Spain).

Spatio-temporal structure of tidally mixed coastal waters: variability and heterogeneity
Laurent Seuront,Yvan Lagadeuc +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the vertical properties of temperature, salinity, in vivo fluorescence, turbidity and light were investigated along an inshore-offshore transect, sampled in different tidal conditions.

TL;DR: The phytoplankton-like structure of lakes and rivers has an important role in determining the food web structure of animals and the environment and its role in promoting growth and survival in animals and humans.
