Abstract: Given that many spatial interaction (SI) systems are often constituted in large databases with high thematic dimensionality, data complexity reduction tasks are essential. The opportunity exists for researchers to examine the formation of different types of SIs as well as their interdependencies by exploring the patterns embedded in the data. To circumvent the limitations of existing methods of flow data compression and visual exploration, we propose an integrated computational and visual approach, known as VISIDAMIN, for handling both SI data projection and SI data quantization at once. The computational method of self-organizing maps serves as the data mining engine in this process. Using a large domestic air travel dataset as a case study, we examine how the characteristics of the air transport system interact with the SI system to create relationships and structures within the US domestic airline market.

Multidimensional urban sprawl in Europe: A self-organizing map approach
TL;DR: In this article, the authors address the issue of urban sprawl in Europe from a multidimensional point of view, identifying the most sprawled areas and characterizing them in terms of population size.

Mapping Large Spatial Flow Data with Hierarchical Clustering
Xi Zhu,Xi Zhu,Diansheng Guo +2 more
TL;DR: A flow clustering method is developed that extracts clusters of similar flows to avoid the cluttering problem, reveal abstracted flow patterns, and meanwhile preserves data resolution as much as possible and is scalable to large flow data sets.

Benchmarking of world cities through Self-Organizing Maps
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that there is a global trend towards the highest possible performance among functionally specialized and heterogeneous world cities in different parts of our world and present a hierarchical benchmark analysis of these cities on the basis of a recently completed comparative study on their socio-economic power.

A Cluster Separation Measure
TL;DR: A measure is presented which indicates the similarity of clusters which are assumed to have a data density which is a decreasing function of distance from a vector characteristic of the cluster which can be used to infer the appropriateness of data partitions.

From visual data exploration to visual data mining: a survey
TL;DR: This work surveys work on the different uses of graphical mapping and interaction techniques for visual data mining of large data sets represented as table data and reviews recent innovative approaches that attempt to integrate visualization into the DM/KDD process, using it to enhance user interaction and comprehension.
A new set of spatial-interaction models: the theory of competing destinations.
TL;DR: Members of the family of spatial-interaction models commonly referred to as gravity models are shown to be misspecified and an undesirable ‘spatial-structure effect’ in estimated distance-decay parameters is examined.

Spatial interaction modelling
John R. Roy,Jean-Claude Thill +1 more
TL;DR: Spatial interaction (SI) is the process whereby entities at different points in physical space make contacts, demand/supply decisions or locational choices as mentioned in this paper, and the choices can include housing, jobs, production quantities, exports, imports, face-to-face contacts, schools, retail centres and activity centres.
