Abstract: It is a great honour and pleasure for me to be able to contribute to the Festschrift Galiano. Professor Galiano is greatly admired as a scholar, and much loved as a human being, by al1 of us: bearing in mind his fine edition of Epigramas Helenísticos, 1 thought 1 would offer, as a token of homage and affection, an interpretation of two Hellenistic epigrams. A. P. VII, 721 ( = Gow-Page, Hellenistic Epigrams, Cambridge, 1965, lines 1367 ff.) concerns the famous battle fought between the Argives and the Spartans for the town of Thyreae. Herodotus (1, 82) tells us that it was decided to leave the fighting to three hundred men of either side, and that at the end of the day the only survivors of the battle were Alcenor and Chromius of Argos and Othryadas of Sparta.
