Abstract: The architectonic organization and neuronal types of the human foetal reticular nucleus (RN)--with special reference to transient characteristics--have been investigated using antisera against calretinin, parvalbumin and neurofilament epitopes of somata and dendrites (SMI 311). The RN consists of four subdivisions (clearly distinguishable in the 6/7th gestational month): The main portion appears as a prominent structure on account of its extension and high packing density of neurons which coexpress calretinin and parvalbumin. These two calcium-binding proteins are also expressed by the perireticular nucleus forming a conspicuous grey within the internal capsule. Perireticular cells form clusters which are in continuity with the main portion, globus pallidus, ganglionic eminence and pregeniculate nucleus. In double-labellings, a medial subnucleus stands out distinctly as it only expresses calretinin. SMI 311-immunopreparations show neurons revealing a high degree of diversification and elaborated dendritic trees. Several transient characteristics become obvious: the perireticular nucleus, not visible in the adult, represents a distinct entity in the human foetal brain. The main portion and the pregeniculate nucleus appearing as prominent greys are dramatically reduced in size later on. The percentage of RN-neurons expressing calretinin, the diversity of neuronal types and elaborated dendritic trees are reduced. The transient features can be correlated with the RN's putative functional roles in development: early RN-afferents to the dorsal thalamus may represent pioneer fibres providing guiding cues for outgrowing axons from or into the thalamus. Moreover, the RN may serve as an intermediate target for growing axons which are sorted and directed towards different final targets.

Microglia in the Cerebral Wall of the Human Telencephalon at Second Trimester
TL;DR: This study investigated the distribution, morphology and phenotype of microglia specifically within the wall of the human telencephalon from 12 to 24 gestational weeks (gw), a period that corresponds to the development of thalamocortical fibres passing through the transient subplate region of the developing cerebral wall.

The function of efference copy signals: Implications for symptoms of schizophrenia
TL;DR: Current data on the role of efference copy signals within different sensory modalities as well as the behavioral, structural and functional abnormalities in clinical groups that support the hypothesis that the failure to disambiguate self-induced from externally generated sensory input may cause some of the positive symptoms in schizophrenia.

Tangential networks of precocious neurons and early axonal outgrowth in the embryonic human forebrain.
TL;DR: A widespread network of precocious MAP2 (microtubule-associated protein 2)-immunoreactive cells, with long, nonaxonal processes, are discovered in the human embryonic forebrain, before the appearance of the cortical plate and the establishment of thalamocortical connectivity.

Differential expression of calcium-binding proteins in the red nucleus of the developing and adult human brain.

TL;DR: The results indicated that the magnocellular and parvocellular parts of the red nucleus were well-demarcated portions from fetal life onwards, thus a dominance of the parvo cellular part over the mag nocellular occurred during development.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the role of the subplate, ganglionic eminence, and reticular thalamic nucleus in long-range path finding in C57BL/6 mice using DiI labeling and in vivo cholera toxin labeling.

On the thalamus
TL;DR: I have removed the glands of the neck on both sides for cancer of the tongue, but not when the tongue cancer was limited to one side, and there is a deep depression left under the jaw, which is slightly disfiguring; and in removing it some ot the fibres of the facial nerve which go up to the angle of -the mouth are sometimes cut, so that control of that angle of the mouth may be slightly affected.

Calcium-binding proteins: selective markers of nerve cells.
TL;DR: The discovery that the symptoms in Parkinson's disease are the consequence of a decrease in the concentration of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the basal ganglia, and that an improvement can be achieved by a dopamine precursor that passes through the blood-brain barrier, has helped to shape the opinion that many neurological and psychiatric diseases can be explained as defects in neurotransmitter systems.

Some aspects of the organization of the thalamic reticular complex
TL;DR: Because of the wide extent of the dendritic fields of the reticular cells and the degree of overlap between the sectors of the complex subtended by adjacent dorsal thalamic nuclei and adjacent cortical areas, it is likely that thereticular complex samples thalamo‐cortical and cortico‐thalamic activity in a somewhat unspecific manner.
