Toward a structure- and process-integrated view of personality: Traits as density distributions of states.
TL;DR: Decontextualized and noncontingent Big-Five content is highly useful for descriptions of individuals' density distributions as wholes, and amount of within-person variability in extraversion was shown to reflect individual differences in reactivity to extraversion-relevant situational cues.

Abstract: Three experience-sampling studies explored the distributions of Big-Five-relevant states (behavior) across 2 to 3 weeks of everyday life. Within-person variability was high, such that the typical individual regularly and routinely manifested nearly all levels of all traits in his or her everyday behavior. Second, individual differences in central tendencies of behavioral distributions were almost perfectly stable. Third, amount of behavioral variability (and skew and kurtosis) were revealed as stable individual differences. Finally, amount of within-person variability in extraversion was shown to reflect individual differences in reactivity to extraversion-relevant situational cues. Thus, decontextualized and noncontingent Big-Five content is highly useful for descriptions of individuals' density distributions as wholes. Simultaneously, contextualized and contingent personality units (e.g., conditional traits, goals) are needed for describing the considerable within-person variation.

A Longitudinal Examination of Personality at Work: Examining the Relationship Between Variability in Personality and Job Performance and Turnover Intentions
Ryan Joseph Hirtz
- 01 Jan 2017
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the relationship between variability in personality and important organizational outcomes, including multi-faceted job performance and turnover intentions, and found that variability in a general factor of personality had statistically significant relationships with anxiety, leader-member exchange, job satisfaction, and self-rated counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs).
The relevance/significance of stimuli appraisals for personality traits in an academic context
TL;DR: The authors investigated the relationship between conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism, and pleasantness and relevance/significance appraisals of academic-related words (in the categories of academicapproach, academicavoidance, performance-evaluative, and academic-neutral).

Quiet Fires Fail to Impress: Introverted Expressions of Passion Receive Less Social Worth
Grace Cormier,Jon M. Jachimowicz +1 more
- 01 Aug 2020
TL;DR: The authors argue that vivacious expressions of passion capture only a narrow set of passion expressions: those characteristic of extraversion and suggest that passion is also expressed in ways more aligned with introversion.
Assessing Psychological Dispositions and States that Can Influence Economic Behaviour
Simon McNair,WR Crozier +1 more
- 02 Aug 2017
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the key psychological dispositions that are associated with differences in financial behavior and discuss methodological issues associated with how these factors are typically measured in research, and with the types of instruments used, that readers should be mindful of when conducting their own research.

Development and validation of brief measures of positive and negative affect: The PANAS scales.
TL;DR: Two 10-item mood scales that comprise the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) are developed and are shown to be highly internally consistent, largely uncorrelated, and stable at appropriate levels over a 2-month time period.
The development of markers for the big-five factor structure
TL;DR: In this paper, a set of 100 unipolar terms for personality traits was developed and compared with previously developed ones based on far larger sets of trait adjectives, as well as with the scales from the NEO and Hogan personality inventories.

Personality and Assessment
Walter Mischel
- 01 Dec 1968
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the acquired meaning of stimuli and on the situation as perceived, viewing the individual as a cognitive-affective being who construes, interprets, and transforms the stimulus in a dynamic reciprocal interaction with the social world.

Self-monitoring of expressive behavior.
