Abstract: The Robot Intelligence Kernel (RIK) is a portable, reconfigurable suite of perceptual, behavioral, and cognitive capabilities that can be used across many different platforms, environments, and tasks. The RIK coupled with a virtual 3D interface have been shown to dramatically improve human-robot interactions across a variety of navigation and exploration tasks.

Middleware and programming models for multi-robot systems
Stefan-Gabriel Chitic
- 15 Mar 2018
TL;DR: An original contribution in the multi-robot context, called SDfR (Service discovery for Robots), a service discovery mechanism for Robots that allows highly mobile robots to keep track of the reachable peers inside a fleet while using an ad-hoc infrastructure.

Response Time of a Mobile Robot
Aldis Baums,Andris Gordyushin +1 more
TL;DR: The response time of an autonomous mobile robot is presented as an internal performance index that characterizes a robot regardless of a particular task.

Methods and Tools to Enable the Design and Verication of Intelligent Systems
Alessandro Pinto
- 01 Jan 2012
TL;DR: The design and verication approach presented in this article is component-based: systems are composition of intelligent modules interacting through command/report interfaces, and the correct execution of the provided commands is guaranteed under the assumption that the required commands are correctly executed by other intelligent modules.

Ecological displays for robot interaction: a new perspective
B. Ricks,C.W. Nielsen,Michael A. Goodrich +2 more
- 28 Sep 2004
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present interfaces which allow users to navigate in 3-D worlds with integrated range and camera information, and demonstrate how to use perceptual cues that people are accustomed to using to understand and use the interface more effectively.
"I call shotgun!": an evaluation of mixed-initiative control for novice users of a search and rescue robot
David J. Bruemmer,Ronald L. Boring,Douglas A. Few,Julie L. Marble,M.C. Walton +4 more
- 10 Oct 2004
TL;DR: The present paper presents results from a wide swathe of over 100 novices who used the resulting system to accomplish a real-world search and detection task and demonstrates the utility of effective robot autonomy and examines the benefits of mixed-initiative control.

David J. Bruemmer,Douglas A. Few,M.C. Walton,Ronald L. Boring,Julie L. Marble,C.W. Nielsen,J.R. Garner +6 more
- 03 Jan 2005
TL;DR: Results indicate that this new tool for interfacing humans and intelligent robots can reduce communication bandwidth and human error, increase operators' subjective "feeling of control", and enable a spectrum of remote robotic applications which have never before been possible.
Improved Human-Robot Teaming through Facilitated Initiative
Douglas A. Few,David J. Bruemmer,Miles C. Walton +2 more
- 01 Sep 2006
TL;DR: Collaborative tasking tools that facilitate dynamic sharing of responsibilities between robot and operator throughout a search and detection task do not experience a significant performance penalty, yet benefit from reduced workload and fewer instances of confusion.
