Abstract: International companies operating businesses successfully in developing and less developed economies can play a vital role in creating wealth and reducing poverty. The chapter begins with an examination of some of the unique features of the business environments generally found in developing and less economically developed nations. This is followed by the introduction of a three-tiered framework, consisting of strategic, interpersonal, and operational levels which can be used in evaluating whether to globalize/standardize business practices or to adapt to local conditions. A general approach to adjusting or creating business operations for conditions found in developing and less developed economies is suggested. The chapter concludes with an examination of productivity and innovation as applied to regions where poverty remains widespread.
