Techniques for interactive computer graphics

The Sketchpad system makes it possible for a man and a computer to converse rapidly through the medium of line drawings. Heretofore, most interaction between man and computers has been slowed down by the need to reduce all communication to written statements that can be typed; in the past, we have been writing letters to rather than conferring with our computers. For many types of communication, such as describing the shape of a mechanical part or the connections of an electrical circuit, typed statements can prove cumbersome. The Sketchpad system, by eliminating typed statements (except for legends) in favor of line drawings, opens up a new area of man-machine communication.

The fundamental idea behind the three-dimensional display is to present the user with a perspective image which changes as he moves. The retinal image of the real objects which we see is, after all, only two-dimensional. Thus if we can place suitable two-dimensional images on the observer's retinas, we can create the illusion that he is seeing a three-dimensional object. Although stereo presentation is important to the three-dimensional illusion, it is less important than the change that takes place in the image when the observer moves his head. The image presented by the three-dimensional display must change in exactly the way that the image of a real object would change for similar motions of the user's head. Psychologists have long known that moving perspective images appear strikingly three-dimensional even without stereo presentation; the three-dimensional display described in this paper depends heavily on this "kinetic depth effect."

The design of airplanes, ships, automobiles, and so-called "sculptured parts" involves the design, delineation, and mathematical description of bounding surfaces. A method is described which makes possible the description of free-form doubly curved surfaces of a very general kind. An extension of these ideas to hyper-surfaces in higher dimensional spaces is also indicated. This surface technique has been specifically devised for use in the Computer-Aided Design Project at M.I.T., and has already been successfully implemented here and elsewhere.

An important area of investigation for the M.I.T. Computer-Aided Design Project is the development of a facility for three-dimensional shape description. The heavy dependence of mechanical design upon three-dimensional objects makes such a facility an indispensable part of the full system which is envisioned. This paper describes the unique features required for three-dimensional graphics. Although the Sketchpad III System described here shares many features and routines with the Sketchpad System described in the preceding paper by Sutherland, the extension of graphical techniques from two to three dimensions introduces many added requirements.

The aim of Computer Aided Design is to create in the computer a model of the design problem. For example, an electronic circuit may be being designed; the engineer will use an environment consisting of standard circuit parts, with the laws that govern the operation, and will use this environment, together with the constraints on performance, to build a model which is his proposed solution to the design problem. This model may now be tested against the specification and will generally be modified iteratively until the design goal is achieved, in this case a layout with the required characteristics. It may also be that the design problem is being tackled by a team, in which case several users of the design system may wish to access and transform the model, for instance to display views and projections of it, or check on how it interfaces with a parallel project.The rest of this paper is concerned with the basic requirements of the data structure package, and with a survey of those packages which have been implemented and about which information is available.
