Abstract: Systemic impacts such as global supply chain failures can spread among urban areas through social and economic linkages. Urban vulnerability to hazards has been studied from the perspective of individual cities, but global vulnerability to systemic impacts at the network scale has not been assessed. Here we analyze the structure of global industrial supply chains as a lens to examine how impacts might spread across the global system of cities. We generate a novel urban risk network that describes industrial flows among 1686 urban areas. In contrast to the prevailing view of the global urban system dominated by the largest, wealthiest cities, we show that the functionality of the network is evenly spread across urban areas. These findings suggest that the network is more vulnerable to multiple simultaneous hazards than to singular impacts to urban areas with the highest nodal strength. We also find that clusters of the most strongly connected urban areas transcend administrative boundaries, increasing the possibility for systemic impacts to spread transnationally. These results illuminate the potential for linkages between city-scale vulnerabilities to climate change impacts and systemic vulnerabilities that emerge at the global network scale.

A spatially-explicit harmonized global dataset of critical infrastructure
TL;DR: The Critical Infrastructure Spatial Index (CISI) as discussed by the authors is a globally harmonized spatial dataset for the representation of critical infrastructure (CI) systems, which can be applied to explore the current landscape of CI, identify CI hotspots, and as exposure input for large-scale risk assessments.
Global spread of local cyclone damages through urban trade networks

TL;DR: This article developed a dynamical model for the spread of individual cyclone impacts across the world's cities and found that cities are vulnerable to economic harm even if they are geographically distant from the location of direct impacts of cyclones.

Uncomfortable knowledge: Mechanisms of urban development in adaptation governance
TL;DR: In this article , the authors explore the intersection of urban climate adaptation governance and the political economy of urban development to identify specific contemporary mechanisms that perpetuate uneven patterns of urban vulnerability and undermine adaptation planning.

Regional resilience assessment based on city network risk propagation and cooperative recovery
TL;DR: This study assesses regional resilience in mainland China using a two-layer city network framework, finding that central and eastern cities have a greater impact on regional resilience, while western cities have less, and that different indicators of resilience correlate differently with influencing factors.

Collective dynamics of small-world networks
TL;DR: Simple models of networks that can be tuned through this middle ground: regular networks ‘rewired’ to introduce increasing amounts of disorder are explored, finding that these systems can be highly clustered, like regular lattices, yet have small characteristic path lengths, like random graphs.

TL;DR: This work proposes a heuristic method that is shown to outperform all other known community detection methods in terms of computation time and the quality of the communities detected is very good, as measured by the so-called modularity.
