Abstract: This paper describes SYNGRAPH (SYNtax) directed GRAPHics) which is a user interface generator for interactive system graphics. This system applies the principles of syntax analysis, parser generation and data abstraction to the development of man-machine interfaces. A great deal of work has been done in the modeling of user interfaces using context-free grammars [Jaco82, Lafu78, Pars79, Reis81, Wass81]. There also has been work done in using parser generation tools for simulating such interactions for prototyping purposes [Hanu80]. The purpose of the system described here is to provide a functional tool for actually implementing graphical user interfaces.

User Software Engineering and the design of interactive systems
Anthony I. Wasserman
- 09 Mar 1981
TL;DR: This paper presents some of principles of user-centered design and shows how they are achieved in the User Software Engineering project, which is intended to provide the applications developer with a development environment that supports the systematic specification and implementation of interactive systems.

TL;DR: It is investigated how error recovery can be mechanised in an ELL(1) and LALR( 1) syntax directed translation scheme and which conditions the syntax must satisfy.
