The fructan syndrome: Evolutionary aspects and common themes among plants and microbes
TL;DR: Overall, the fructan syndrome may be related to water scarcity and differences in physicochemical properties, for instance, water retaining characteristics, at least partially explain why different fructans types with different branching levels are found in different species.
Structures of fructan and galactan from Polygonatum cyrtonema and their utilization by probiotic bacteria.
Zhang Junyin,Chen Hulan,Lan Luo,Zhipeng Zhou,Wang Yingxiang,Gao Tianyu,Lian Yang,Peng Teng,Mingyi Wu +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, two new polysaccharides (a fructan and a galactan) were purified from the dried and the processed P. cyrtonema rhizome, respectively.

Comparison of Immunomodulatory Effects of Fresh Garlic and Black Garlic Polysaccharides on RAW 264.7 Macrophages
Min Li,Yi-Xi Yan,Qing-Tao Yu,Yong Deng,Ding-Tao Wu,Ying Wang,Ya-Zhong Ge,Shao-Ping Li,Jing Zhao +8 more
TL;DR: Fructan might be the bioactive component in garlic and it is indicated that during the fermentation treatment, fructan constituents of garlic has degraded, and basically no immunomodulatory effect can be found in black garlic polysaccharides.

Structural characterization and anti-tumor effects of an inulin-type fructan from Atractylodes chinensis
TL;DR: The in vitro antitumor activity of ACPS-1 was evaluated on four human cancer cell lines and showed that it could significantly inhibit Hela, HepG2, and 7721 cell proliferation, especially HepG 2, for which the fructan showed a proliferative inhibition rate as high as 87.40%.

Structural characterization and antioxidant activities of one neutral polysaccharide and three acid polysaccharides from the roots of Arctium lappa L.: A comparison.
TL;DR: All five polysaccharides displayed high antioxidant ability, especially ALP-4 in H2O2-induced HepG2 cell model and ALP-1 in metronidazole [MET]-induced zebrafish model and highlighted their potential as antioxidants in functional foods.

Colorimetric Method for Determination of Sugars and Related Substances
TL;DR: In this article, a method was developed to determine submicro amounts of sugars and related substances using a phenol-sulfuric acid reaction, which is useful for the determination of the composition of polysaccharides and their methyl derivatives.

New method for quantitative determination of uronic acids
TL;DR: A new method for determination of uronic acids with meta-hydroxydiphenyl is introduced, which is simpler, quicker, more sensitive, and more specific than other methods, and it needs lesser amounts of fluid.

A simple and rapid method for the permethylation of carbohydrates
Ionel Ciucanu,Francisc Kerek +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a new method for the permethylation of sugars involving methyl iodide, a solid base (NaOH, KOH, or tert-BuOH/NaOH), and methyl sulphoxide was suggested.

Fructan: More Than a Reserve Carbohydrate?
Irma Vijn,Sjef Smeekens +1 more
TL;DR: Most plants store starch or Suc as reserve carbohydrates, but about 15% of all flowering plant species store fructans, which are linear and branched polymers of Fru.

Evolutionary origins and natural functions of fructans – a climatological, biogeographic and mechanistic appraisal
TL;DR: The function of fructan as a vacuolar and soluble carbohydrate in osmoregulation and in Growth by cell inflation rather than temperature-dependent cell division is given as the most likely explanation for the global success of the 15% of the angiosperm flora which store fructans as a principal reserve carbohydrate.
