Abstract: The stereotyping literature within psychology has grown considerably over the past decade. In large part, this growth can be attributed to progress in understanding the individual mechanisms that give rise to stereotypic thinking. In the current review, the recent psychological literature on stereotypes is reviewed, with particular emphasis given to the cognitive and motivational factors that contribute to stereotype formation, maintenance, application, and change. In addition, the context-dependent function of stereotypes is highlighted, as are the representational issues that various models of stereotypes imply.

TL;DR: This article used Phenomenological Variant Ecological Systems Theory as a strengths-based approach to investigate 10 undergraduate Black women's perceptions of race and gender on their STEM identity development and engagement, and found that these women enter STEM experiences cognizant of their race/gender identities, naming them in isolation and intersectionally as a potential risk or as being protective, positive, and empowering for their STEM engagement.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the role of teacher stereotypes in the formation of ethnic and racial achievement gaps in German primary schools and find that teachers with more negative stereotypes expect lower mathematics and reading achievements for ethnic minority students at the beginning of first grade.
