Speaker–listener neural coupling underlies successful communication

Abstract: Verbal communication is a joint activity; however, speech production and comprehension have primarily been analyzed as independent processes within the boundaries of individual brains. Here, we applied fMRI to record brain activity from both speakers and listeners during natural verbal communication. We used the speaker's spatiotemporal brain activity to model listeners' brain activity and found that the speaker's activity is spatially and temporally coupled with the listener's activity. This coupling vanishes when participants fail to communicate. Moreover, though on average the listener's brain activity mirrors the speaker's activity with a delay, we also find areas that exhibit predictive anticipatory responses. We connected the extent of neural coupling to a quantitative measure of story comprehension and find that the greater the anticipatory speaker-listener coupling, the greater the understanding. We argue that the observed alignment of production- and comprehension-based processes serves as a mechanism by which brains convey information.

Putting language back into ecological communication contexts
TL;DR: This article reviewed evidence that the characteristics of linguistic and extra-linguistic contexts may significantly influence communication, including spoken language comprehension, and provided evidence on the use of new paradigms and methodological advancements that may enable the study of complex languages.
Strategic Choice of Preferences: the Persona Model
TL;DR: The authors used the persona model to explain cooperation in non-repeated versions of the Prisoner's Dilemma and provided quantitative predictions to distinguish this explanation of cooperation from simply assuming people have actual preferences biased towards cooperation.
Neural synchrony predicts children's learning of novel words
Elise A. Piazza,Elise A. Piazza,Ariella Cohen,Ariella Cohen,Juliana Trach,Juliana Trach,Casey Lew-Williams +6 more
TL;DR: This work observed synchronized neural activity between child participants during book reading and found a positive correlation between learning and intersubject neural synchronization in parietal cortex, an area implicated in narrative-level processing in adult research.
The Relationship Between Head Motion Synchronization and Empathy in Unidirectional Face-to-Face Communication
TL;DR: The results showed greater head motion synchronization during high empathy, which suggests that the degree of empathy is reflected by a different relationship between the phase and frequency of headMotion synchronization during face-to-face communication.
Social in, social out: How the brain responds to social language with more social language.
TL;DR: This work combines quantitative linguistic analysis and neuroimaging to prospectively predict the degree of social language that participants utilize when retransmitting ideas as a function of initial language inputs and neural activity during idea exposure.

Controlling the false discovery rate: a practical and powerful approach to multiple testing

TL;DR: In this paper, a different approach to problems of multiple significance testing is presented, which calls for controlling the expected proportion of falsely rejected hypotheses -the false discovery rate, which is equivalent to the FWER when all hypotheses are true but is smaller otherwise.
