Abstract: Current research on natural-language speech-understanding provides encouragement for the development of systems for the vocal control of mechanical devices. However, the designer of such systems faces a variety of difficulties in allowing for references to the position, orientation, and direction of motion of objects and actions in space. This paper analyzes sources of these difficulties and conceivable solutions to them.

“Put-that-there”: Voice and gesture at the graphics interface
Richard A. Bolt
- 01 Jul 1980
TL;DR: The work described herein involves the user commanding simple shapes about a large-screen graphics display surface, and because voice can be augmented with simultaneous pointing, the free usage of pronouns becomes possible, with a corresponding gain in naturalness and economy of expression.

Put-that-there
TL;DR: This research presents a probabilistic architecture that combines attention to the geometry of the input device and the response of the user to solve the challenge of speech-to-text translation.

Natural language driven image generation
Giovanni Adorni,Mauro Di Manzo,Fausto Giunchiglia +2 more
- 01 Jan 1984
TL;DR: In this article, the experience made through the development of a NAtural Language driven Image Generation system is discussed, where the system is able to imagine a static scene described by means of a sequence of simple phrases.
KANTRA-human-machine interaction for intelligent robots using natural language
Tim C. Lueth,Thomas Laengle,Gerd Herzog,Eva Stopp,Ulrich Rembold +4 more
- 18 Jul 1994
TL;DR: A dialogue-based interface KANTRA is presented, in which the human-machine interaction is not restricted to unidirectional communication and can be applied to make the use of intelligent robots more flexible.

Outline of a New Approach to the Analysis of Complex Systems and Decision Processes
Lotfi A. Zadeh
- 01 Jan 1973
TL;DR: By relying on the use of linguistic variables and fuzzy algorithms, the approach provides an approximate and yet effective means of describing the behavior of systems which are too complex or too ill-defined to admit of precise mathematical analysis.

Supervisory control of remote manipulation
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a real-time control system that can perform complicated tasks, on the moon and beyond, upon command from earth using a computer-controlled remote unit, capable of making limited decisions of its own but supervised from home base.

Practical Natural Language Processing: The REL System as Prototype
TL;DR: The question that is sought to be answered in this chapter is: How can a qualified professional effectively use the computer for relevant research with minimum constraints on the language of communication?
