Abstract: We summarize a series of recent research results made at Edinburgh University based on applying domain knowledge of standard shapes and relationships to solve or improve architectural reconstruction problems. The problems considered are how to enforce known relationships when data fitting, how to extract features even in very noisy data, how to get better shape parameter estimates and how to infer data about unseen features.

Automatic reconstruction of as-built building information models from laser-scanned point clouds: A review of related techniques
TL;DR: This article surveys techniques developed in civil engineering and computer science that can be utilized to automate the process of creating as-built BIMs and outlines the main methods used by these algorithms for representing knowledge about shape, identity, and relationships.

Architectural Modeling from Sparsely Scanned Range Data
Jie Chen,Baoquan Chen +1 more
TL;DR: The pipeline deals with architectures that are made of planar faces and faithfully constructs a polyhedron of low complexity based on the incomplete scans, which offers a convenient user interface but minimizes the necessity of user intervention.

Probable reconstruction of surfaces in occluded regions by computed symmetry
Sebastian Thrun,Eliot Wegbreit +1 more
- 10 Dec 2004
TL;DR: In this article, a system for obtaining a probable 3D map of an occluded surface of an object is presented, which is based on the identified symmetries of the initial 3D image of the object.

Songhua Xu,Athinodoros S. Georghiades,Holly Rushmeier,Julie Dorsey,Leonard McMillan +4 more
- 14 Jun 2006
TL;DR: A new method for filling holes in geometry obtained from 3D range scanners using 2D images of the areas where geometric data is missing, which builds on existing techniques for using scanned geometry and for estimating shape from shaded images.

Semiautomatic Parametric Modelling of the Buildings on Town Scale Models
TL;DR: This article presents the semiautomatic parametric method, conceived and developed for the 3D modelling of town parts of physical town scale models, to provide an entirely automatic system for the buildings of physical scale models.

Random sample consensus: a paradigm for model fitting with applications to image analysis and automated cartography
TL;DR: New results are derived on the minimum number of landmarks needed to obtain a solution, and algorithms are presented for computing these minimum-landmark solutions in closed form that provide the basis for an automatic system that can solve the Location Determination Problem under difficult viewing.
A method for registration of 3-D shapes
Paul J. Besl,H.D. McKay +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a general-purpose representation-independent method for the accurate and computationally efficient registration of 3D shapes including free-form curves and surfaces, based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, which requires only a procedure to find the closest point on a geometric entity to a given point.

Texture synthesis by non-parametric sampling
Alexei A. Efros,Thomas Leung +1 more
- 20 Sep 1999
TL;DR: A non-parametric method for texture synthesis that aims at preserving as much local structure as possible and produces good results for a wide variety of synthetic and real-world textures.
Object modeling by registration of multiple range images
YangQuan Chen,Gerard Medioni +1 more
- 09 Apr 1991
TL;DR: The authors propose an approach that works on range data directly and registers successive views with enough overlapping area to get an accurate transformation between views and performs a functional that does not require point-to-point matches.

Surface reconstruction from unorganized points
Hugues Hoppe,Tony DeRose,Tom Duchamp,John W. McDonald,Werner Stuetzle +4 more
- 01 Jul 1992
TL;DR: A general method for automatic reconstruction of accurate, concise, piecewise smooth surfaces from unorganized 3D points that is able to automatically infer the topological type of the surface, its geometry, and the presence and location of features such as boundaries, creases, and corners.
