TL;DR: This work investigates why many difficulties arise in simulating queues with Pareto service and investigates why the truncation point (maximum service time possible) is too large.

Abstract: M/G/1 queues, where G is a heavy-tailed distribution, have applications in Internet modeling and modeling for insurance claim risk. The Pareto distribution is a special heavy-tailed distribution called a power-tailed distribution, and has been found to serve as adequate models for many of these situations. However, to get the waiting time distribution, one must resort to numerical methods, e.g., simulation. Many difficulties arise in simulating queues with Pareto service and we investigate why this may be so. Even if we are willing to consider truncated Pareto service, there still can be problems in simulating if the truncation point (maximum service time possible) is too large.

TL;DR: The PPBP model provides a simple and accurate network traffic generator that matches statistical properties of real-life IP networks and is implemented in NS-3, a Long-Range Dependent model for network traffic.
Multiclass G/M/1 queueing system with self-similar input and non-preemptive priority
TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce the first analytical performance model for multiple-queue systems with self-similar traffic scheduled by priority queueing to support differentiated QoS classes, which is based on a G/M/1 queueing system that takes into account multiple classes of traffic that exhibit long-range dependence and selfsimilarity.

Long-lasting transient conditions in simulations with heavy-tailed workloads
Mark Crovella,Lester Lipsky +1 more
- 01 Dec 1997
TL;DR: It is argued that such simulations must be treated as effectively always in a transient condition, and one way to address this problem is to introduce the notion of time scale as a parameter of the simulation, and to discuss methods for simulating such systems while explicitly incorporating time scale.
An Algorithm to Compute the Waiting Time Distribution for the M/G/1 Queue
TL;DR: This paper develops a method for approximating Laplace transforms, and gives algorithms to compute the steady state probability distribution of the waiting time of an M/G/1 queue to a desired accuracy.
