TL;DR: In this article, the interaction between soil, vegetation, and landscape controls can explain observed trends in soil moisture variability, and successfully transform point-scale measurements and parameterizations to scales required for climate studies, operational weather forecasting, and large scale hydrological modeling.

Abstract: Introduction Knowledge on how different controls govern soil moisture variability is the key to explaining observed trends in soil moisture variability, and successfully transform point-scale measurements and parameterizations to scales required for climate studies, operational weather forecasting, and large scale hydrological modeling. During previous field campaigns different trends of soil moisture variability versus mean soil moisture content have been observed. Here we show how the interaction between soil, vegetation, and landscape controls can explain these different trends.

Soil moisture dynamics and land surface-atmosphere interaction
A.J. Teuling
- 01 Jan 2007
TL;DR: In this article, the spatial and temporal variability of soil moisture in relation to atmospheric conditions is investigated by using a dimensionless analytical model, and the impact of root water uptake on the coupled dynamics of the soil moisture and evapotranspiration is investigated.

Empirical equations for some soil hydraulic properties
R. B. Clapp,George M. Hornberger +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a power function relating soil moisture and hydraulic conductivity is used to derive a formula for the wetting front suction required by the Green-Ampt equation.
A simple method for determining unsaturated conductivity from moisture retention data
TL;DR: In this article, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function for soil can be calculated directly from a moisture retention function and a single measurement of hydraulic conductivities at some water content, and agreement of k calculated using this procedure with experimentally determined conductivities for five soil samples was found to be at least as good as with other calculation procedures.
Plants in water-controlled ecosystems: active role in hydrologic processes and response to water stress: II. Probabilistic soil moisture dynamics
Francesco Laio,Francesco Laio,Amilcare Porporato,Amilcare Porporato,Luca Ridolfi,Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a stochastic model for soil moisture dynamics at a point is studied in detail, where rainfall is described as a marked Poisson process, producing a state-dependent infiltration into the soil.

Preferred states in spatial soil moisture patterns: Local and nonlocal controls
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a conceptual and observational case in which soil water patterns in temperate regions of Australia switch between two preferred states: the wet state is dominated by lateral water movement through both surface and subsurface paths, with catchment terrain leading to organization of wet areas along drainage lines.
Variability in surface moisture content along a hillslope transect: Rattlesnake Hill, Texas
TL;DR: In this article, the authors characterize variations in moisture content in the 0-5 cm surface soil layer along a hillslope transect by means of intensive sampling in both space and time and make inferences regarding the environmental factors that influence this variability.
