[Class 100 (iv)] Relay type-wheel actions.-In actions comprising a type-wheel geared to a driving-shaft, and means for arresting the type-wheel for type-selection, arrest is effected without interrupting the train of gears, and impression is deferred until a predetermined point in the cycle of the driving-shaft. As applied to record-controlled machines comprising a set of type-wheels, arrest of the type-wheels occurs at different points in the cycle, and impression occurs at the same point. In the record-card controlled mechanism shown in the Figure, each type-wheel 2 of a set is mounted on a support 15 which can rock on a shaft 11 and is urged towards the platen 31 by a spring 19, movement being normally prevented by a bail 22 controlled by cams 27 which are geared to a driving-shaft 1 arranged to rotate continuously or intermittently. The type-wheel is geared to pinion 10 engaging a pinion 8 having internal teeth 6 in engagement with a pinion 5 which engages a pinion 4 on the driving-shaft. The pinion 10 is geared also to a ratchet-wheel 14. The gears are so arranged that the type-wheel and ratchet-wheel make one revolution for each revolution of the driving-shaft. The pinion 5 is carried by a bell-crank 36 having an arm 37 which normally abuts on a dog 42 cooperating with a bell-crank 45 controlled by a cam 116. The bell-crank 45 is restrained by a latch 75 in connection with the armature 83 of a magnet 84 in circuit with a card-reading brush. A pawl 56, coupled to the bell-crank 45, is carried by a rocking plate 58 having steps 94 for engaging a bell-crank 3 controlled bv a cam 68 and formed with teeth 65 for engaging a detent 69 which is controlled by a cam 86 and is restrained by the latch 75. The mechanism effects type-selection in the same manner as that described in Specifications 380,474 and 408,805. If a type is represented by two perforations, the first perforation releases the latch 75, and the detent 69 holds the rocking plate 3 in set position. The second perforation again releases the latch, and the bell-crank 45, being no longer obstructed by the cam 116, moves the pawl 56 into engagement with the ratchet-wheel, arrest thereof being effected differentially by contact of one of the steps 94 with the rocking plate 3. If a type is represented by one perforation, the latch is released once. When the ratchet-wheel is arrested, the type-wheel is arrested with the selected type in the printing line, but impression is deferred until the cams 27 release the bail 22, the pinion 5 meanwhile performing an idle planetary movement. When the bail 22 is released, each type-wheel of the set is rocked for impression, and, immediately afterwards, the pawls 56 are disengaged from the ratchet-wheels 14, the type-wheels and associated pinions again rotate, and the bell-cranks 36 are returned by means of springs in connection with arms 38 thereon. During return of the bell-cranks, the pinions 5 are accelerated, and the type-wheels and the ratchet-wheels 14 are restored to their initial positions relatively to the driving-shaft. The bell-cranks 36 may be provided with positive returning-means consisting of a bail 101 connected to levers 104 operated by cams 107. When cards having only one perforation in a column are employed, the members 58, 69, 3 may be omitted, the pawl 56 being pivoted on the framework. Hammer-impression arrangements.-Instead of moving the type-wheels 2 for impression, cam-controlled hammers may be employed.
