Processing "d-linked" phrases.

TL;DR: It is shown that readers and listeners were more willing to accept a grammatical “island violation” containing a pronoun when the pronoun's antecendent was a d-linked interrogative than when the antecedent was non–d-linked, suggesting that they check a discourse representation for the pronoun antecedents.

Abstract: Linguists draw a distinction between two types of interrogatives: discourse linked (d-linked) phrases such as which man, which implies the existence of a set of contextually determined entities (men) from which the speaker is asking for a choice, and non–d-linked interrogatives such as who, which carry no such implication. Two questionnaires and an on-line reading study showed that readers prefer a d-linked phrase more than a non–d-linked phrase as the antecedent for a pronoun, suggesting that d-linked phrases are immediately instantiated in a discourse representation that is checked during the process of pronoun interpretation. Comparable difficulty is not observed for non–d-linked interrogatives. A questionnaire and an on-line listening study also showed that readers and listeners were more willing to accept a grammatical “island violation” containing a pronoun when the pronoun's antecendent was a d-linked interrogative than when the antecedent was non–d-linked, suggesting that they check a discourse representation for the pronoun antecedent. All results suggest that d-linked phrases are immediately interpreted in a discourse representation, not just in a syntactic representation.

Online pronoun resolution in L2 discourse: L1 influence and general learner effects
TL;DR: This paper investigated whether advanced second language learners of a non-subject language (Dutch) are influenced by their null subject first language (L1) (Turkish) in their offline and online resolution of subject pronouns in L2 discourse.
The source ambiguity problem: Distinguishing the effects of grammar and processing on acceptability judgments
TL;DR: Evidence from acceptability and self-paced reading experiments demonstrates that D-linking effects are likely reducible to independently motivated cognitive mechanisms whose effects emerge in a wide range of sentence contexts, and suggests that Superiority effects, in general, may owe their character to differential processing difficulty.

The syntax-discourse divide: processing ellipsis.
Lyn Frazier,Charles Clifton +1 more
TL;DR: A series of comprehension studies onVP-ellipsis and sluicing and the relation of syntactic and discourse processing suggest that discourse processing differs from syntactic processing, where the most accessible material is recent material found low in the syntactic tree.

Locality and Accessibility in Wh-Questions
Philip Hofmeister,T. Florian Jaeger,Ivan A. Sag,Inbal Arnon,Neal Snider +4 more

TL;DR: This article considered the complexity of word order variations in English and found that heavy-NP shift is more likely if the shifted NP is more complex than the NP it shifts over, and the choice between different wh-phrase orders, as in (1), has been determined by (categorical) grammatical constraints, such as superiority.
