Abstract: A number of languages have what can be called prepositional complementizers, items which look like prepositions and have some of the properties of prepositions but appear in positions in which complementizers appear. In this paper I shall be concerned with Welsh prepositional complementizers and, in particular, with their implications for the analysis of subjectless infinitives. I shall consider the possibility of providing an analysis of the Welsh facts within the government-binding (GB) framework of Chomsky (1981, 1982, 1984), in which subjectless infinitives are clauses. I will argue that GB assumptions preclude a satisfactory account of the data. I will also show that certain facts relating to agreement pose further problems for a GB approach. I will then show that the facts are quite straightforward if one assumes that subjectless infinitives are bare VPs, as argued for Welsh in Borsley (1984a), and that VPs and Ss are members of the same basic category, as proposed in Borsley (1983, 1984b). It looks, then, as if we have some interesting evidence here for these assumptions.

Successive cyclicity, anti-locality, and adposition stranding
K Abels
- 01 Jan 2003
TL;DR: The authors studied the effect of adposition stranding on successive cyclicity in natural languages and proposed a theory of mirror theory for downward head movement, which is based on a derivational model of the grammar.
The Use of like as a Marker of Reported Speech and Thought: A Case of Grammaticalization in Progress
Suzanne Romaine,Deborah Lange +1 more
TL;DR: This paper showed that in many cases, discourses introduced by be + like can also represent internal thought, as Butters (1982) noted, and that the speaker is invited to infer that this is what the speaker was thinking or saying to himself as the girl approached.

On the superficiality of Welsh agreement
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose to represent unexpressed noun phrases of various kinds in the superficial constituent structure and not just at some abstract level, contrary to the view of some frameworks, and this idea can be implemented in a straightforward way within linearization-based Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar.

Sluicing, Idioms, and Island Repair
Isaac Rottman,Masaya Yoshida +1 more
TL;DR: This paper showed that some idioms in English are not compatible with resumptive pronouns and argued that sluicing involves wh-gap dependencies rather than wh-resumptive pronoun dependencies.
Mutation and constituent structure in Welsh
TL;DR: It seems that whereas P&P assumptions about syntactic structure are quite problematic in this area, HPSG provides just the right sort of syntactic Structure Grammar to give a satisfactory account of the process.

Some Concepts and Consequences of the Theory of Government and Binding
Noam Chomsky
- 01 Jan 1982
TL;DR: Chambon et al. as mentioned in this paper introduced government-binding theory and applied it to several new domains of empirical data, and proposed some revisions to the principles of the theory that lead to greater unification, descriptive scope, and explanatory depth.
