Pre-exposure Modulates Attraction to Sex Pheromone in a Moth

Abstract: In behavioural experiments we investigated the influence of previous short exposure to sex pheromone on subsequent response of male Spodoptera littoralis moths to sex pheromone. We found that pre-exposed males showed increased sensitivity to female sex pheromone after a single exposure to a pheromone plume compared to that found in naive males. The increased responsiveness lasted for at least 27 h after the exposure, showing that it was not just a short-term sensitization of the males. Exposure to the odour source without upwind movement towards the source was enough to increase the responsiveness. Physical activation without exposure to odour did not affect responsiveness. The increase in responsiveness after exposure was higher when the males were pre-exposed to natural female pheromone gland extract than when they were exposed to a higher dose of the main component, even though both odour sources elicited similar upwind attraction in naive males. Thus, the quality of the pheromone mixture to which males were exposed influenced the subsequent response.

Codling Moth Management and Chemical Ecology
TL;DR: Pheromone-mediated mating disruption has become a commercially viable pest management technique and is used to control the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, a key insect pest of apple, on 160,000 ha worldwide.

Insect olfactory receptors: contributions of molecular biology to chemical ecology.
TL;DR: In insects, insects appear to be good models to establish fundamental concepts of olfaction with the development of powerful genetic, imaging, and behavioral tools, and this new field of study will greatly contribute to the understanding of insect chemical communication mechanisms, particularly with agricultural pests and disease vectors.

Plasticity of olfactory-guided behaviour and its neurobiological basis: lessons from moths and locusts
TL;DR: In moths and locusts, age and juvenile hormone changed the behavioural responses to pheromones, and changes in the central nervous system were slow under the influence of juvenile hormone (days) or fast after mating (minutes).

Experience-based modulation of behavioural responses to plant volatiles and other sensory cues in insect herbivores
Peter J. Anderson,Sylvia Anton +1 more
TL;DR: This review will focus upon behavioural changes in holometabolous insect herbivores during host plant choice and localization of mating partners, modulated by experience to sensory cues.

Her odours make him deaf: crossmodal modulation of olfaction and hearing in a male moth
TL;DR: It is shown that stimulation of one sensory modality can modulate the response to information from another, suggesting that behavioural thresholds are dynamic and depend on the behavioural context.

Parasitoid—Host Relationship

- 01 Jan 1984
TL;DR: The chemical ecology of interspecific interactions is extremely diverse and complex and is exemplified by the insect parasitoid—host relationship, where a host insect may support several different parasitoids species, each of which is unique in its response to the host.

Sex Pheromones of Two Noctuid Moths
TL;DR: The active components of the red bollworm moth emits a complex attractant scent have been identified and these include dodecan-1-yl acetate, CH3(CH2)11OOCCH3, and trans-9,11-dodecadien-1,yl acetates, CH2 = CHCH=CH(CH 2)8O OCCH3.

TL;DR: In this paper, the attractive properties of volatile and nonvolatile components of the male-soiled bedding have been analyzed in female mice that had no previous experience with adult male-derived chemical signals (chemically naive females) using two-choice preference tests.

Associative learning in honey bees
TL;DR: It is concluded that memory needs time to be established and is processed in sequential phases, and it is speculated that the amnesia-sensitive memory resides in the mushroom bodies and theAmnesia-resistant memory in certain structures (eg the lateral protocerebrum) perhaps together with the Mushroom bodies.
