TL;DR: In this article, a review of pion-nuclear scattering at low energy and in the region of the 3.3 resonance is presented, focusing on approaches which are on a microscopic level as far as the treatment of higher order many-body corrections to lowest order multiple scattering expansions are concerned.

Abstract: Recent developments in the investigation of pion-nuclear scattering at low energy and in the region of the 3.3 resonance are reviewed. The emphasis is on approaches which are on a microscopic level as far as the treatment of higher order many-body corrections to lowest order multiple scattering expansions are concerned. The importance of pion absorption and production in few-nucleon systems (D, 3He, 3H) to obtain information about basic reaction mechanisms is emphasised. Calculations of π-nuclear elastic scattering based on microscopic many-body schemes will be summarized.
