Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the correction of a transmission error by devising the processing unit such that a bit plane coding picture data having bit information of same picture element on one and same line is obtained. CONSTITUTION:A multi-value picture data such as a color picture data or an intermediate tone picture data is converted into a binary expression data for the facsimile transmission. Then each picture element data of a multi-value picture in the unit of n-bit picture element is sequentially written in parallel over one line in n-set of storage means 1, 2,..., n provided corresponding to each bit. When the picture element data by one line is written in the n-set of storage means 1, 2,..., n, the bit plane data by one line stored respectively in bit split to the n-set of storage means 1, 2,..., n is read sequentially serially from the n-set of storage means 1, 2,..., n and the bit plane data in the unit of lines is obtained. Thus, even if any transmission error takes place, it is easily corrected.
