TL;DR: It was shown that morphological criteria traditionally used for classification in Chlorellaceae are burdened with a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, which represents adaptations to environmental factors in order to optimize floating in the water column and to resist grazing pressure.

Abstract: Chlorella is one of the archetypical forms of coccoid green algae and one of the best-studied phototrophic eukaryotes. However, its systematics remains enigmatic due to conflicts between morphological and molecular phylogenetic approaches. The sequences of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene of nine strains of Chlorella and related taxa, and the ITS2 region of 17 strains of Chlorellaceae were determined and included in phylogenetic analyses. The secondary structure of the ITS2 region of C. vulgaris was compared to that of Parachlorella beijerinckii. All phylogenetic analyses showed that the Chlorellaceae form a clade within the Trebouxiophyceae. The Chlorellaceae studied here are divided into two sister groups: (1) the Parachlorella-clade with Parachlorella beijerinckii gen. et sp. nov. and P. kessleri comb. nov. as well as Diclosler acuatus and Closteriopsis acicularis; and (2) the Chlorella-clade including the ‘true’ spherical Chlorella species C. vulgaris, C. lobophora and C.sorokiniana. The latter are...

Fatty acid profiles and their distribution patterns in microalgae: a comprehensive analysis of more than 2000 strains from the SAG culture collection
TL;DR: FA distribution patterns are suitable chemotaxonomic markers to define taxa of higher rank in algae, however, due to their extensive variation at the species level it is difficult to make predictions about the FA profile in a novel isolate.

Present state of the systematics of planktonic coccoid green algae of inland waters
Lothar Krienitz,Christina Bock +1 more
TL;DR: This review discusses the main developments in the systematics of coccoid green algae over the last three decades and the alignment of eco-functional groups of algae with true species identities using the barcoding conception will provide a better understanding of the interaction between organisms and their environment.

TL;DR: All Ch Lorella-like strains related to Chlorella saccharophila and C. ellipsoidea to the genus Chloroidium Nadson and to emend its diagnosis are proposed, as well as four new combinations of these species that are likely to be used as chemotaxonomic marker.

TL;DR: The fundamental equations of the general model, with 12 independent substitution parameters, are used to obtain a formula which corrects the effect of multiple and parallel substitutions on the measure of evolutionary divergence between two homologous sequences.

The Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 Exhibits a Common Secondary Structure in Green Algae and Flowering Plants
TL;DR: A common secondary structure that is conserved despite wide intra- and interfamilial primary sequence divergence is revealed and may contribute significantly to the value of ITS-2 sequences in phylogenetic analyses at several taxonomic levels, but particularly in characterizing populations and species.
