Abstract: An assessment of an optical-fiber LAN (local area network) in which some strategies for increasing fault tolerance have been defined is presented. By means of a stochastic model based on a Markov chain with an absorbent state, the basic parameter linked to network reliability is assessed. In particular, the increase in mean time to failure and performability achieved by introducing a new monitor recovery process is determined. The results presented confirm the validity of the monitor recovery process in enhancing the fault tolerance of a token-ring network and show that the strategy for defining fault-tolerant protocols and architectures effectively enhances network reliability. >

Ring type LAN having fault processing system
Ohba Toshimitsu
- 07 Dec 1990
TL;DR: A ring type LAN with a fault processing system which detects a faulty station when a logical fault occurs at any of a plurality of stations making up the ring-type LAN is described in this paper, which provides at each station at least a timer for measuring the transmission time of a beacon frame or other fault notifying frame and, when the timer runs out, forms a loopback or bypass with the adjoining station, temporarily removes the stations from the ring, has the removed stations detect by themselves if they are normal, once again incorporates the stations, other than the one for which the

Enhancing reliability in an industrial LAN: design and performability evaluation
TL;DR: In this paper, a fault-tolerant fiber-optic LAN (local area network) is presented and assessed by applying Markov process theory, through which the mean time to failure (MTTF) and performability are assessed.

Architecture and Design of a Reliable Token-Ring Network
TL;DR: The architecture, performance, transmission system, and wiring strategy of a token-ring local area network implemented at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory are described and the delay-throughput performance of the token ring is shown to depend very little on data rate and distance.
