Abstract: Impressions of force are commonplace in the visual perception of objects interacting. It is proposed that these impressions have their source in haptically mediated experiences of exertion of force in actions on objects. Visual impressions of force in interactions between objects occur by a kind of generalization of the proprioceptive impression of force to interactions between objects on the basis of matching to stored representations of actions on objects carried out by the perceiver. Such experiences give rise to a distinctive perceptual interpretation of interactions between objects as involving force exerted by one object acting against resistance offered by the other object. Active, moving objects are seen as exerting force; inactive objects are seen as offering varying degrees of resistance and not as exerting force unless there is reason to think that they acted back on the active object. The results of 3 experiments in which people viewed simple animations of objects colliding and made judgments of force and resistance supported several predictions made by this account.

Hybrid Causal Representations
TL;DR: This chapter defends a new view on causal reasoning, a hybrid representation account, and demonstrates how causal dependency, causal dispositional, and causal process representations mutually interact in generating complex representations driving causal inferences.
The representational dynamics of remembered projectile locations.
TL;DR: By manipulating the retention intervals between the target's disappearance and the participant's responses, this work was able to uncover a representational analogue of the trajectory of a projectile that supports an internalization of gravity in the visual representation of projectiles.
Causation, Touch, and the Perception of Force
Phillip Wolff,Jason Shepard +1 more
TL;DR: The authors argue that the representation of causal relations is based on the feeling of force as understood through the sense of touch, and propose to ground causation in people's sense of feel and use it to handle the problem of abstract causal relations.
Agents and Causes: Dispositional Intuitions As a Guide to Causal Structure
TL;DR: To model different types of error attribution, a causal Bayes net model with separate error sources for causes and effects is augmented with a new model using the size of Markov violations as the empirical indicator of differential assumptions about the sources of error.

Causation, prediction, and search

TL;DR: The authors axiomatize the connection between causal structure and probabilistic independence, explore several varieties of causal indistinguishability, formulate a theory of manipulation, and develop asymptotically reliable procedures for searching over equivalence classes of causal models.
Action recognition in the premotor cortex
TL;DR: It is proposed that mirror neurons form a system for matching observation and execution of motor actions, similar to that of mirror neurons exists in humans and could be involved in recognition of actions as well as phonetic gestures.
