Abstract: One of the major drawbacks in the use of biomedical materials is the occurrence of biomaterials centered infections. After implantation, the host interacts with a biomaterial by forming a conditioning film on its surface and an immune reaction towards the foreign material. When microorganisms can reach the biomaterials surface they can adhere to it. Adhesion of microorganisms to an implant is mediated by their physico-chemical surface properties and the properties of the biomaterials surface itself. Subsequent surface growth of the microorganisms will lead to a mature biofilm and infection, which is difficult to eradicate by antibiotics. The purpose of this review is to give an overview of the mechanisms involved in biomaterials centered infection and the possible methods to prevent these infections.

Nano/microscale order affects the early stages of biofilm formation on metal surfaces.

TL;DR: Results show that these bacteria formed well-defined aggregates on randomly oriented nanosized granular gold substrates, which are related to the design of engineered surfaces to enhance or inhibit bacterial colonization on the surfaces and to the biocontrol of soil ecosystems.
Quantification of the interaction between biomaterial surfaces and bacteria by 3-D modeling.
TL;DR: A model for calculating interaction energies between spherical bacteria and arbitrarily structured 3-D surfaces is proposed, combining the Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, Overbeek theory and an extended surface element integration method to demonstrate the influence of roughness on the interaction energy.
Antiadhesive activity of ulvan polysaccharides covalently immobilized onto titanium surface
TL;DR: The ability of ulvan, a non biocidal algal polysaccharide, to limit bacterial adhesion on titanium was investigated and it was shown that immobilized ulvans on titanium surface strongly decreased by about 90% the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Mini-review: Antimicrobial peptides and enzymes as promising candidates to functionalize biomaterial surfaces
TL;DR: This review critically examines the potential of these protein-like compounds for developing antibacterial coatings by reporting their immobilization into different substrata using different immobilization strategies.
Phagocytosis of staphylococci biofilms by polymorphonuclear neutrophils: S. aureus and S. epidermidis differ with regard to their susceptibility towards the host defense.
TL;DR: Biofilms are not inherently protected against the attack by phagocytic cells; their sensitivity, however, varies among bacterial strains, presumably due to properties of the extracellular biofilm matrix affecting the motility of PMN on the film.

Biomaterial-centered infection: microbial adhesion versus tissue integration.
TL;DR: Modifications to biomaterial surfaces at an atomic level will allow the programming of cell-to-substratum events, thereby diminishing infection by enhancing tissue compatibility or integration, or by directly inhibiting bacterial adhesion.

Concise review of mechanisms of bacterial adhesion to biomaterial surfaces.
TL;DR: The process of bacterial adhesion to biomaterial surfaces is a complicated process affected by many factors, including the characteristics of the bacteria themselves, the target material surface, and the environmental factors, such as the presence of serum proteins or bactericidal substances.
