Abstract: What is meant by ‘‘town planning’’? Who does it, and why? One place to look for answers is in the professional Journal: accordingly a survey was made of all articles published in RAPIJ over the past ten years. Such a survey should partially indicate who is involved in urban planning and what they are doing and saying. We already know that many like to discourse on specialisation and ‘‘the theory of town planning’’ (see, for instance ‘‘Town Planners Speak Up’’, p. 52 and ‘‘The Heads’ Tales’’, p. 87). It was therefore further hypothesised that if generalist and specialists actually exist, and if town planning is a discipline with its own theory, then such a survey would help to define them.
