Abstract: This paper investigates whether the party affiliation of governors (Democrat or Republican) has an impact on the allocation of state expenditures. Exploiting gubernatorial election results from 1960 to 2012 and a Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD), we find that Democratic governors allocate a larger share of their budget to health/hospitals and education sectors. We find no significant impact of the political party of governors on total spending, only on the allocation of funds. The results are robust to a wide range of controls and model specifications. (JEL D72, H75, H72).

Partisanship and local fiscal policy: evidence from Brazilian cities
TL;DR: In this paper, the role of political parties in shaping local fiscal policy in the context of Brazilian cities in the 2004-2016 period was studied using a regression-discontinuity design, and no effect of left-wing mayors on the size of the city government nor on the allocation of spending across main budget categories (current spending, investment and personnel).

Fidel Perez-Sebastian,Ohad Raveh +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors construct a political economy model of a federalized economy with district heterogeneity in natural resource abundance and test the model's predictions using data on roll call votes in the US House of Representatives over the major federal tax bills initiated during the period of 1945-2003.

Controlling the false discovery rate: a practical and powerful approach to multiple testing
Yoav Benjamini,Yosef Hochberg +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a different approach to problems of multiple significance testing is presented, which calls for controlling the expected proportion of falsely rejected hypotheses -the false discovery rate, which is equivalent to the FWER when all hypotheses are true but is smaller otherwise.
Economic Growth in a Cross Section of Countries
TL;DR: For 98 countries in the period 1960-1985, the growth rate of real per capita GDP is positively related to initial human capital (proxied by 1960 school-enrollment rates) and negatively related to the initial (1960) level as mentioned in this paper.

Manipulation of the running variable in the regression discontinuity design: A density test
TL;DR: In this paper, a test of manipulation related to continuity of the running variable density function was developed for popular elections to the House of Representatives and roll call voting in the House, where sorting is neither expected nor found.
