Optimal Bandwidth Choice for the Regression Discontinuity Estimator
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the problem of optimal choice of the smoothing parameter (bandwidth) for the regression discontinuity estimator, and propose an optimal, data dependent, bandwidth choice rule.

Abstract: We investigate the problem of optimal choice of the smoothing parameter (bandwidth) for the regression discontinuity estimator. We focus on estimation by local linear regression, which was shown to be rate optimal (Porter, 2003). Investigation of an expected-squared-error-loss criterion reveals the need for regularization. We propose an optimal, data dependent, bandwidth choice rule. We illustrate the proposed bandwidth choice using data previously analyzed by Lee (2008), as well as in a simulation study based on this data set. The simulations suggest that the proposed rule performs well.

The Effects of Banking Competition on Growth and Financial Stability: Evidence from the National Banking Era
TL;DR: This paper showed that banks operating in markets with lower entry barriers extend more credit, and the resulting local credit boom is associated with an expansion in real economic activity, however, banks in these markets also take more risk and are also more likely to default.

Regression Kink Design: Theory and Practice
TL;DR: In this article, an RKD approach was applied to study the effect of unemployment benefits on the duration of joblessness in Austria, and discuss implementation issues that may arise in similar settings, including the use of bandwidth selection algorithms and bias correction procedures.

The impact of education on political ideology: Evidence from European compulsory education reforms
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine to what extent this association is causal and find that on average, among the individuals compelled into additional education from these specific reforms, an additional year of education moves individuals to the right of the political continuum by about 5-6%.

Business as usual: Politicians with business experience, government finances, and policy outcomes
Brian Beach,Daniel B. Jones +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate whether government finances and policy outcomes are different under politicians with business experience and find no evidence that the election of a candidate with a business experience impacts city expenditures, revenues, unemployment rates, and other outcomes.

Supporting small firms through recessions and recoveries
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors use variation in the access to a government credit certification program to estimate the financial and real effects of supporting small firms, and find that eligible firms borrow more and at lower rates than non-eligible firms, allowing them to increase investment and employment during crises.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present experiments and generalized Causal inference methods for single and multiple studies, using both control groups and pretest observations on the outcome of the experiment, and a critical assessment of their assumptions.

Estimating causal effects of treatments in randomized and nonrandomized studies.
TL;DR: A discussion of matching, randomization, random sampling, and other methods of controlling extraneous variation is presented in this paper, where the objective is to specify the benefits of randomization in estimating causal effects of treatments.

Regression Discontinuity Designs: A Guide to Practice
Guido W. Imbens,Thomas Lemieux +1 more
TL;DR: In regression discontinuity (RD) as mentioned in this paper, assignment to a treatment is determined at least partly by the value of an observed covariate lying on either side of a fixed threshold.

Manipulation of the running variable in the regression discontinuity design: A density test
TL;DR: In this paper, a test of manipulation related to continuity of the running variable density function was developed for popular elections to the House of Representatives and roll call voting in the House, where sorting is neither expected nor found.
