Optimal Bandwidth Choice for the Regression Discontinuity Estimator
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the problem of optimal choice of the smoothing parameter (bandwidth) for the regression discontinuity estimator, and propose an optimal, data dependent, bandwidth choice rule.

Abstract: We investigate the problem of optimal choice of the smoothing parameter (bandwidth) for the regression discontinuity estimator. We focus on estimation by local linear regression, which was shown to be rate optimal (Porter, 2003). Investigation of an expected-squared-error-loss criterion reveals the need for regularization. We propose an optimal, data dependent, bandwidth choice rule. We illustrate the proposed bandwidth choice using data previously analyzed by Lee (2008), as well as in a simulation study based on this data set. The simulations suggest that the proposed rule performs well.

Lighting up the last mile: The benefits and costs of extending electricity to the rural poor
TL;DR: In this article, a least-cost first principle was used to estimate the welfare gains from the expansion of the electricity grid in the Philippines and showed that the benefits of rural electrification may be significantly high, even in the very short run.

Large-Scale Education Reform in General Equilibrium: Regression Discontinuity Evidence from India
TL;DR: This article developed a general equilibrium model to capture the consequences of massive countrywide schooling initiatives and provided unbiased estimates of the model's elasticities, using a regression discontinuity derived from Indian government policy.

FinTech Lending and Bank Credit Access for Consumers
TL;DR: Piskorski et al. as discussed by the authors show that banks expand credit access for consumers who obtain FinTech loans, consistent with FinTech relieving information frictions, this effect is stronger for more credit-constrained consumers.

The Impacts of Paid Family Leave Benefits: Regression Kink Evidence from California Administrative Data
TL;DR: This paper used 10 years of California administrative data with a regression kink design to estimate the causal impacts of benefits in the first state-level paid family leave program for women with earnings near the maximum benefit threshold, finding no evidence that a higher weekly benefit amount (WBA) increases leave duration or leads to adverse future labor market outcomes for this group.
Split decisions : family finance when a policy discontinuity allocates overseas work
TL;DR: The authors investigated a policy discontinuity in the Philippines that resulted in quasi-random assignment of temporary, partial-household migration to high-wage jobs in Korea and found large effects on spending, borrowing, and human capital investment, but no effects on saving or entrepreneurship.

- 01 Jan 2001
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present experiments and generalized Causal inference methods for single and multiple studies, using both control groups and pretest observations on the outcome of the experiment, and a critical assessment of their assumptions.

Estimating causal effects of treatments in randomized and nonrandomized studies.
TL;DR: A discussion of matching, randomization, random sampling, and other methods of controlling extraneous variation is presented in this paper, where the objective is to specify the benefits of randomization in estimating causal effects of treatments.

Regression discontinuity designs in economics
David S. Lee,Thomas Lemieux +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an introduction and user guide to regression discontinuity (RD) designs for empirical researchers, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of estimating RD designs and the limitations of interpreting these estimates.
Regression Discontinuity Designs: A Guide to Practice
Guido W. Imbens,Thomas Lemieux +1 more
TL;DR: In regression discontinuity (RD) as mentioned in this paper, assignment to a treatment is determined at least partly by the value of an observed covariate lying on either side of a fixed threshold.

Manipulation of the running variable in the regression discontinuity design: A density test
TL;DR: In this paper, a test of manipulation related to continuity of the running variable density function was developed for popular elections to the House of Representatives and roll call voting in the House, where sorting is neither expected nor found.
