Abstract: Collections of microfungi on Tanacetum sp. (Asteraceae) in Italy resulted in the discovery of a new genus with characteristics similar to Ophiobolus. Phylogenetic analysis of sequence data showed that the new collection is a sister group to Ophiobolus and a new genus with morphologically distinct characters. In this paper, we introduce Ophiosimulans in the family Phaeosphaeriaceae with O. tanaceti as the type species. A detailed description and illustrations are provided and the new taxon is compared with similar genera in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Ophiosimulans is characterized by cylindrical asci with short pedicels and filiform ascospores with up to 15 septa, separating into two parts in the centre of the spore. Since Leptosphaeria tanaceti is also known from Tanacetum, we examined the syntype to compare it with Ophiosimulans, and provide an illustrated account of the species.

TL;DR: Evidence for the placement of the new taxon in the family Phaeosphaeriaceae is supported by morphology and phylogenetic analysis of a combined LSU, SSU, ITS and TEF 1-α DNA sequence dataset, and maximum-likelihood, maximum-parsimony and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses support Neostagonosporella as a distinct genus within this family.

Abstract: Comparative studies of the nucleotide sequences of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes provide a means for analyzing phylogenetic relation ships over a wide range of taxonomic levels (Woese and Olsen 1986; Zimmer et al 1988; Medlin et al 1988; Jorgensen and Cluster 1989). The nuclear small-subunit rDNA sequences (16S-like) evolve rela tively slowly and are useful for studying distantly related organisms, whereas the mitochondrial rRNA genes evolve more rapidly and can be useful at the ordinal or family level. The internal transcribed spacer region and intergenic spacer of the nuclear rRNA repeat units evolve fastest and may vary among species within a genus or among populations.
