Abstract: Information systems development has to deal with evolving technologies and changing environments. Therefore, the engineering of methods as the problem of creating suitable instruments for new situations is critical to information systems development. The failure of IS development projects shows that method engineering is an open field. The question is if and how research on ontology can contribute to overcome the current situation. We show, based on linguistic and philosophical findings, how ontology can be used as linchpin in method engineering. We found that the language critique approach of Kamlah and Lorenzen (1984) provides the means to IDEA GROUP PUBLISHING 701 E. We present an ontology-driven engineering method for information systems development. Our method helps to create required language constructs to handle new situations. The ontology-driven engineering method is demonstrated using an elaborate example case.

Bridging metamodels and ontologies in software engineering
TL;DR: This work investigates the literature on both metamodelling and ontologies in order to identify ways in which they can be made compatible and linked in such a way as to benefit both communities and create a contribution to a coherent underpinning theory for software engineering.

John C. Henderson,N. Venkatraman +1 more
TL;DR: A model for conceptualizing and directing the emerging area of strategic management of information technology is developed in terms of four fundamental domains of strategic choice: business strategy, information technology strategy, organlzational infrastructure and processes, and information technology Infrastuvture and processes--each with its own underlying dimenslons.

How Competitive Forces Shape Strategy
Michael E. Porter
- 01 Jan 1989
TL;DR: The essence of strategy formulation is coping with competition as mentioned in this paper... Yet it is easy to view competition too narrowly and too pessimistically, while one sometimes hears executives complaining to the contrary, intense competition in an industry is neither coincidence nor bad luck.
