Abstract: The artificial selection of the directly acting or acute RNA tumor viruses for high transforming ability has led to the isolation of defective retroviral genomes that have picked up, by accidental recombination, some of the important genes that influence, trigger or regulate cell division. These genes belong to at least four functionally different groups. Each of them can contribute to tumor development and/or progression after activation by structural or regulatory changes. Growth factor genes may act as oncogenes following constitutive activation in a cell that normally responds to, but does not produce, the corresponding growth factor (the autocrine model, exemplified by sis). Growth factor receptors may be fixed in a state of continuous, faulty signalling by the truncation of their external, ligand binding portion (examples: erb-B, fms). Genes coding for proteins involved in signal transduction may be activated by point mutations in certain, important domains (example: the ras-family). DNA binding pro...

Association of somatotrophinomas with loss of alleles on chromosome 11 and with gsp mutations.
TL;DR: The results reveal that the development of somatotrophinomas is associated with alterations in both dominant and recessive oncogenes and further characterization of these genetic abnormalities will help to elucidate the multistep etiology and progression of somatic cancer.
Viruses and cancers: possible role of hepatitis C virus
TL;DR: The presence of a geographical etherogeneity in the prevalence of HCV‐positive NHL suggests that other co‐factors, i.e. genetic and environmental, could be involved in the lymphomagenesis.

Oncogenes: cause or consequence in the development of glial tumors.
TL;DR: The concept of oncogene involvement in brain tumors must be extended to include the other factors such as G-proteins, growth factor receptors, membrane-associated and cytoplasmic protein kinases, which are all responsible for the control of the cell growth and their response to external signals including chemotherapeutic drigs.

Modulation of gene expression in autoimmune disease and aging by food restriction and dietary lipids.
TL;DR: Both FR and omega-3 fatty acids may modulate the aging and autoimmune disease processes by not only altering the fatty acid composition, membrane fluidity, and signal transduction, but also by modulating the lymphokine hormone receptors and their functions and thereby modulating expression of several genes in various tissues during the aging process.

Differential expression of hla antigen of HLA anigens on human B‐cell lines of normal and malignant origin: A consequence of immune surveillance or a phenotypic vestige of the progenitor cells?
TL;DR: The findings suggest that the low expression of HLA determinants on the BL cells is a phenotypic vestige of the normal BL precursor.

Complementation of the tumorigenic phenotype in human cell hybrids.
TL;DR: The results suggest that complementation of the tumorigenic phenotype can occur and that at least 2 different complementation groups may be involved.

Transformation by raf and myc oncogenes.
TL;DR: The role of raf appears to be that of a cytosolic ser/thr specific protein kinase which was placed downstream of ras in the signal transduction of serum growth factors by ras and raf antibody microinjection experiments.
