On the Relation Between Visualized Space and Perceived Space
39
TL;DR: The authors argued that there is no distinction between the spatial content of visual imagery and the spatial contents of visual perception, and they also pointed out the possibility of superimposing an imagined object upon the perceived scene.

Abstract: In this paper, I will examine the question of the space of visual imagery. I will ask whether in visually imagining an object or a scene, we also thereby imagine that object or scene as being in a space unrelated to the space we’re simultaneously perceiving or whether it is the case that the space of visual imagination is experienced as connected to the space of perceptual experience. I will argue that the there is no distinction between the spatial content of visualization and the spatial content of visual perception. I will base my conclusion on two uncontroversial, empirically confirmed aspects of imagery: (a) the perspectival character of imagery, and (b) the possibility of superimposing an imagined object upon the perceived scene.

The Transparency of Experience
M. G. F. Martin
- 01 Jan 2002
TL;DR: The authors pointed out that the main force of this claim is to point out an explanatory challenge to sense-datum theories of perception, which cannot explain the fact that introspection indicates that our sensory experiences are directed on, or are about, the mindindependent entities in the world around us, that our sense experience is transparent to the world.

Mental Imagery
Bence Nánay
- 18 Apr 2023
TL;DR: Mental imagery plays a crucial role in perception, emotions, action execution, and desires. It is involved in a vast majority of perceptual episodes and helps us understand many puzzling features of perception.

Multimodal Mental Imagery
Bence Nánay
- 18 Apr 2023
TL;DR: Multimodal mental imagery is the phenomenon of abstract mental imagery being triggered by sensory input in another sense modality.
Unconscious Mental Imagery
Bence Nánay

TL;DR: Unconscious mental imagery is posited to explain experimental results from various experimental paradigms.
Mental Imagery versus Imagination
Bence Nánay
- 18 Apr 2023
TL;DR: Mental imagery is a form of perceptual representation that is different from imagination. Imagination involves mental action, while mental imagery is a perceptual representation.

The emulation theory of representation: motor control, imagery, and perception.
TL;DR: The emulation theory of representation is developed and explored as a framework that can revealingly synthesize a wide variety of representational functions of the brain, including reasoning, theory of mind phenomena, and language.
The transparency of experience
TL;DR: In this paper, a common objection to sense-datum theories of perception is that they cannot give an adequate account of the fact that introspection indicates that our sensory experiences are directed on, or are about, the mind-independent entities in the world around us, that our sense experience is transparent to the world.
