Abstract: We review the presence and signatures of the non-equilibrium processes, both non-Maxwellian distributions and non-equilibrium ionization, in the solar transition region, corona, solar wind, and flares. Basic properties of the non-Maxwellian distributions are described together with their influence on the heat flux as well as on the rates of individual collisional processes and the resulting optically thin synthetic spectra. Constraints on the presence of high-energy electrons from observations are reviewed, including positive detection of non-Maxwellian distributions in the solar corona, transition region, flares, and wind. Occurrence of non-equilibrium ionization is reviewed as well, especially in connection to hydrodynamic and generalized collisional-radiative modelling. Predicted spectroscopic signatures of non-equilibrium ionization depending on the assumed plasma conditions are summarized. Finally, we discuss the future remote-sensing instrumentation that can be used for detection of these non-equilibrium phenomena in various spectral ranges.

Solar UV and X-ray spectral diagnostics
Giulio Del Zanna,Helen E. Mason +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a review of the diagnostic methods used to measure electron densities, electron temperatures, differential emission measure (DEM), and relative chemical abundances is presented, focusing on the optically thin emission from the solar atmosphere, mostly found at UV and X-ray (XUV) wavelengths.
Electron Power-Law Spectra in Solar and Space Plasmas
Mitsuo Oka,Joachim Birn,Joachim Birn,Marina Battaglia,Christopher C. Chaston,Spencer Hatch,George Livadiotis,Shinsuke Imada,Yoshizumi Miyoshi,M. Kuhar,Frederic Effenberger,Frederic Effenberger,Elin Eriksson,Yuri V. Khotyaintsev,Alessandro Retinò +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review previous observations of the power-law index in a variety of different plasma environments with a particular focus on sub-relativistic electrons, and they point out a need for more systematic and coordinated studies of power law distributions for a better understanding of possible scaling laws in particle acceleration as well as their universality.

Quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy: The art and the practice
TL;DR: In this article, the authors give analytical approximations of the plasma quasi-thermal noise (QTN), and study how the constraints of the real world in space can (or cannot) be compatible with plasma detection by QTN spectroscopy.

Dynamic Hydrogen Ionization

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the ionization of hydrogen in a dynamic solar atmosphere and show that the timescale for ionization/recombination is dominated by the slow collisional leakage from the ground state to the first excited state.

An updated evaluation of recombination and ionization rates. Commentary
TL;DR: In this paper, the Coulomb-Born or distorted wave with exchange approximations was used to estimate the ionization and recombination rates for astrophysically abundant elements. But the results of the analysis were limited to the direct ionization process and the excitation autoionization contribution.
