Socio-cognitive Networks: Modeling the Effects of Space and Memory on Generative Social Structures
Changkun Zhao,Ryan Kaulakis,Jonathan H. Morgan,Jeremiah W. Hiam,Joseph P. Sanford,Frank E. Ritter,Geoffrey P. Morgan +6 more
- 01 Dec 2012
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the relationships between environmental and cognitive factors as they influenced the formation of social networks through modeling how these factors affect tie formation between pairs of agents in a simulated world, and found that changes to each of these exogenous factors affected the network's average memory activation value of each tie.

An Analysis of National Hockey League Playoff Games and City-Level Crime Counts
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors examine how assault, disorder, and property crimes change when playoff games are played at home relative to when they are played away and find that during home games there are 7% more disorder crimes and 4% more property crimes than during away games, which suggests that city responses to playoff hockey games should prioritize crime reduction strategies to improve public safety.

Social Change and Crime Rate Trends: A Routine Activity Approach
Lawrence E. Cohen,Marcus Felson +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a "routine activity approach" is presented for analyzing crime rate trends and cycles. But rather than emphasizing the characteristics of offenders, with this approach, the authors concentrate upon the circumstances in which they carry out predatory criminal acts, and hypothesize that the dispersion of activities away from households and families increases the opportunity for crime and thus generates higher crime rates.

Image of the city

Abstract: What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion -- imageability -- and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.
