Abstract: This report identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact over the coming five years in higher education around the world. It highlights six emerging technologies or practices that are likely to enter mainstream use within three adoption horizons (one year or less; two to three years; four to five years) over the next five years. Key trends and challenges that will affect current practice over the same period frame these discussions. The six technologies featured include: massively open online courses (MOOCs) and tablet computing on the near-term horizon; games and gamification, and the further refinement of learning analytics on the mid-term horizon; and 3D printing and wearable technology on the far-term horizon.
